Its a tricky position for a top club though.

Players get game time in these continental clubs but if you are a top PL team its very difficult to blood youngsters, unless they are really exceptional.

The higher up the tree you are, the more you almost have to accept that you pay someone else to give these players experience, by effectively letting them develop them and paying £50m for a player rather than £15m 2-3 years earlier. Young players end up having to learn their trade in front of huge crowds expecting you to be quality and consistent and win. Not always the ideal environment for development.

Chelsea kinda got it right in buying loads at a young age and loaning them out all over the place. they at least made some money even if the player didnt turn out to be good enough for their squad.

I think city are doing the same. But they own teams in lots of leagues and can send players to their own clubs for experience. Red Bull too, but I think a smaller scalebthan city group.

The majority of players coming from the Dutch league flop, with a handful of exceptions. Who knows how this bloke will fair

Glad the manager is getting the players he wants, but with money tight, and LB not being a priority, it seems an odd one
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is money tight? How come?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No champs League.

Commercial deals seem to have plateaued.

We need so many signings that every penny will count
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Roughly £100m cleared from the wage bill.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

nah. Half that.

Plus have to add whatever Garner, Donny and the new lad earn.

Ten Hag has known about this lad for a long time and whilst left back isn't the pressing position this window, he shares the same agent as De Jong. He was talking him up last year and obviously sees him as a big talent. In fact, quite a lot of people have been. He's not some random chump that we've been conned into buying.
My ignorant assumption at this point is that Ten Hag has liked the player for more than a year. He couldn't really sign him at Ajax because of their rivalry but has had him on hsi radar for a while. I'm sure that whilst speaking to De Jong's team, they were or became aware Ten Hag liked the player and they've said something along the lines of "Lyon have agreed a deal, he would be very interested in United, there's a deal that can be done there if you're interested...."

With the fee involved and the potential of the player, it absolutely makes sense to grab him.

What I don't get though is I often see fans complaining that we don't buy these players until they smash it at the likes of Dortmund, Lyon, Ajax etc and we pay £50/60/70 million for them but then when we do make a buy like that, there's still whinging and complaining because "it's not a position we need" or they don't immediately and obviously improve the first team so what's the point? We actually make more of these transfers than a lot of people realise. I see a lot of moaning about our scouts and I'm sure we could and should do a lot better in that department but at the time, most of the youth players I see peolle crying to be given a chance have been brought in at a young age through scouting. Hannibal, Garnacho, McNeil, Hernandez were all brought in, to name a few. They are part of what the scouting team do.

Seems to me like it was just a case of a good deal at a good time for a promising player who was already on the manager's radar. It won't affect whatever budget we had planned and he could well force his way into the team. I think it's a great signing and a slight indication that our forward planning and transfer strategy is changing.

He might not work out but he represents the type of signing we should be making 1-3 of in a window. If he doesn't work out, he probably still fetches more than what we paid for him. Another thing I see a lot of moaning about us not being able to do.

I think you have to really pessimistic and miserable to not feel positive in any way about this signing.
