In today's game, what about our own Perisic?

Vidal and Alexis Sanchez have been passed around abit too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The thing with Perisic is that I would say he’s actually decent same with Alexis. Agree on Vidal never understood why he’s so highly rated.

I killed hours and hours playing FM 2007 and won everything with Spurs. Terry Dixon (remember him) was my star striker. He was absolutely mustard on there and turned into a world class player.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2007 version was in the golden age of FM in my opinion. It got far too complicated in the later versions. I also built a dynasty with Spurs and won everything. I think I even deliberately finished lower in the league so I could qualify for the Uefa Cup and win that too
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I don’t play it anymore - it’s far too complicated now. The fun has been stripped out of it.

I don't know about Perisic, I would say he has been well above average for his whole career.

Sanchez had several seasons at Arsenal of absolutely class performances with great numbers in terms of goals. He was good at Barca too.

Yeah you are right Perisic is above decent. Wipe the above from the records.

Morata definitely qualifies for me. Never put in great numbers or looked world class, has consistently moved between big clubs for big money.

Yeah sorry scrub Zlatan and Beckham too.

Anyone remember Cherno Samba being world class on Championship Manager and barely even average in real life?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
My go to Championship Manager signings were Kim Kalstrom and Kennedy Bakircioglü - absolute icons of the game. Samba was amazing as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Freddy Adu - about 12 different clubs and resorted to doing adverts for Vaccum Cleaners

Morata was another I had in mind.

On FM, I played it in the original Championship manager days. Loved signing Kallstrom from Djurgårdens for peanuts. Taribo West was another on a freebie that was hard to beat. Sigpurdsonn, Selakovic, Adu, Papadouplous etc all cheap. Geez I wasted many a hour of my childhood playing those games.

There was this one Danish player Nielsen (I always forget his first name) but he played right wing and was OG super sub, got me some amazing points coming off the bench.

Never played any of the new ones after trying one in about 03/04 ….was just too much to do and think about

01/02 has always been the version for me and still play it from time to time with updated players from the official website ….they run updates every window and the game is free these days

Yeah 99-00 & 00-01 were the peaks for me. Usually my first go to was to sign good scouts then send them all over the place on scouting operations

First thing I do

I always start in conference to give myself a test (do play as Tottenham now and then) usually Kidderminster (local side) or Torquay (strangely because of Helen from soccer am)

Fill the scouts up and sign a load of frees…..usually find a star or two

Great game that I’ve lost a lot of time lung and liver to over the years

CM 97/98 was a favourite of mine. Got Greenock Morton to win the Champion's League back-to-back, signing the likes of Hernan Garivia, Maricio Ramos, Robert Prosinecki for them making them unstoppable.

CM 96/97 is my all time favourite, though. I'd often start with Carlisle, getting the usual suspects on a free (Graeme Tomlinson, Michael Clegg, Michael Black etc.), ensuring Stephane Pounewatchy, Dean Walling, Jamie Robinson, and David Reeves were all high-statted, and then own it.

Surely Fred at United qualifies for the list. He had a better season last year but only by his own standards. He went from dreadful to adequate.

In depends on what you regard as elite. I think Paulinho qualifies too assuming Spurs fit that category. He was awful and moved on and got gigs at plenty of big clubs before the penny dropped.

Great article though. I’m gonna be thinking of shiiiit 90s footballers all night now.

I think a lot of it comes down to exposure. Back then no one knew shiiiiit about Poborsky. He suddenly pulls off a worldy chip and everyone thinks he’s a genius. He signs for United and bombs. No one takes a punt on an international based on one tournament anymore. I thought that might happen with Damsgaard after the euros as he was brilliant but no one has taken him off Sampdoria. He might come good but he has the sniff of the type of player you’re talking about.

With Paulinho I don’t think he’s moved around enough clubs to qualify - Kevin Prince Boateng in with a shout though.

I think scouting, and analytics is also so much more advanced now meaning that the likes of Zenden hopping between Barca and Liverpool etc have to some degree become a thing of the past, although perhaps not as much of an anachronism as I thought given some of the modern players others have pointed out.

Also when it comes to crap 90’s footballers there is always one that just jumps to mind immediately and that is England’s very own Carlton Palmer.
