But Dalot has been pretty useless for us. Is getting into the Portuguese squad that tough at the moment and a fair barometer of how good a player is?
We’ve struggled so far to get rid (Milan weren’t interested) and I’m guessing he’ll just run down his contract and leave for free.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was a punt as a development possibility, and has been more or less average as a backup I’d say.
As to any exit, we’ll see. His contract extension is going to be triggered, so he’ll still have until the end of next season (June 2024). In the meantime, he’s costing absolute peanuts, which, if he does leave, should mean that recouping at least some of his relatively modest transfer fee next summer shouldn’t be too difficult.
AWB was a terrible signing. His transfer fee alone cost something like 50% more than Dalot’s *transfer fee and wages over five seasons combined*. And he was signed to be the first choice at RB. Dalot wasn’t.
As bad decisions by United on signings go, I wouldn’t even put Dalot in the top ten in his time at the club.

Trying to remember the last time we didn’t have a terrible transfer window.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And 2007 was a massively overrated transfer window as well.
He’s been absolute shiiiiiiit as backup. At least AWB has shown he can play in the prem. Dalot would struggle in the championship.
That’s because nearly every transfer we’ve made during his time has been poor.
Similar to the Telles signing, same price, both back up but far less proven. Both poor signings even if not too expensive.
One of the best on paper windows actually made us worse in 2001 when we signed Veron and RVN!
(Surely it was Winter 19/20 though. Which wasn’t perfect - cough, Ighalo, cough - but Bruno was brought in. Which at least makes it decent.)

Well, they'll be recommending tons and tons of players, and by the nature of the game, both the majority of those chased and the majority of those passed up on won’t turn out to be world class players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely, but as I think Rangnick said; if you can't sign a top player, at least don't sign a bad one. He also said you should be aiming for more than a 50% success rate.

From memory, he was very much a Jose signing anyway. Not sure how much our scouts had to do with that and how much it was Jose and his staff who wanted him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jose doesn't exactly sign kids, so that would tell me it's a scout signing, but who knows.
Wasn’t it that Dalot and Jose both used Mendes as agent?
I mean, he was part of the team that qualified from the group with France and Germany in Euro 2020, wins caps despite his competition being Cancelo and Semedo, played 30-odd games for Milan on loan (including I think every Europa League game until United faced them), and has something like 50 top flight appearances under his belt at the age of (just turned) 23.
He isn’t a starter at United, or any top European club. But he’s clearly better than a Championship player. If he leaves United for a Championship team, I will eat my Portugal shirt

I agree entirely when we’re talking about established senior players for the first team.
Personally, I have no qualms whatsoever about the club taking punts on promising kids, and in fact would be much happier if a larger percentage of the transfer budget were spent on such (which, tbf, has started to happen).
Dan James was sold to a prem club, doesn’t mean he’s not a championship player. In fact, he’s actually better than Dalot. And I hate Dan James with a passion.

Well, it does mean he isn’t *literally* a Championship player.
I mean, we’re all hoping he becomes one in nine months’ time, but…
McTominay starts in midfield for Manchester United. What level players are literally playing at and where their real level is aren’t the same. He’s another who’s level is in the Championship.
I mean, James Garner was one of the best players in the Championship last season.
I think it’s pretty grim down there…

Not sure about that. If we had a better quality squad then maybe we could divert more spending to youngsters, however very few of them make the grade—so it's higher risk.
This is seriously a sackable offence. They wanted someone who could put it about more and they chose Arnautovic???!!!!!
Never have I seen a lazier player at my club. Only Haller runs him close
Imagine wanting a physical striker and not going balls deep on a Mitrovic deal.
You’re gonna keep flogging this Mitrovic thing aren’t you?
