I would be surprised if he doesn't improve our short term (2-3 years). It's not optimal with these kinds of ''pension player'' signings, but maybe he can somehow get us out of the mud we're currently in.
It's a panic signing, no doubt about that. It's not value for money, isolated, but it's better than nothing.
If the Casemiro signing by the other hand can convince others to come aswell, it might look less bad.
Speaking transfer budget or finance wise... Nevermind..

This will be a mistake. He won’t be the player we hoped. He’ll look decent initially and then fade. Next season we’ll still be hoping we sign a DM. I hope I’m wrong.

I know I’m starting to sound like UWW. I do have a bad feeling about this transfer. I hope I’m hugely wrong.

I think we're all just exhausted by the window!
Comes to something when signing one of the world's best DMs is met with lethargy and scepticism. Yet we've all been stung too many times before.
At least we can legit say we will have Brazil's midfield starting for us most weeks

Could be a World Cup-winning midfield by Christmas. I doubt it though.

See this is worrying.
I wonder if Ronaldo made this deal happen on the promise he’d stay if we signed him
(Not saying Ronaldo should stay but the club might be so in thrall to him that they’re doing what they can to please him and get him to stay).
He's a good player and in theory is what we need. Yes, he may be the wrong side of 30 (just) but he's not a pace player so could still deliver 3-4 years of top quality
My concern is that this is just the FDJ money. But even if it is, Erickson, Casemiro and Fred SHOULD be a significant upgrade on Pogba, McT and Fred.
If, we did get FDJ (pretty unlikely now), then Erickson, Caemiro and FDJ SHOULD be a great trio.
I wouldn’t agree with the price and think he’s slightly overrated but surely West Ham would have taken around 100 million for Declan Rice.
His wages would probably be lower than Casemiro so the deal would be a similar price overall and we’d have a 28 year old at the end of the 5 years not a 35 year old.
Another theory: Maybe ETH has realised that the it's the destroyer position that United really needs to fill and has therefore shifted his priority over FDJ or an FDJ-equivalent.

It’s the kind of signing that assured me our scouting dept is the war room from Moneyball. A group of old farts who refuse to adapt and think that the same old theories will work forever. Our lot definitely ask their sons who we should sign then go for golf, cigars and a scotch.

Maybe he's had his '5-3 at Leicester' moment already. Hagball totally abandoned and we're going to be the most negative side in the league after we escape with a respectable 2-0 defeat against Liverpool.

Position we require a player in
I don’t see the problem with the deal.
He will probably be let go on a free in 3 years anyway when he inevitably wants to finish his career back in Brazil.

I think the motivation to come to us is the only question mark against this signing. It's clearly financial why he's coming.
If he performs as he has for Madrid then I agree it's a decent deal. Just hope we don't get Di Maria and Sanchez after their big paydays.

I know he's 30 but he's not played a ridiculous amount of games though so it's not like he'll be battered. He's beem pretty consistent in terms of appearances in the last few years though with no obvious sign of injury so if he looks after himself no reason he can't play his position for another 3/4 years at least.

We know he's coming for the money. Just got to hope he still brings his A game too. Huge risk though.
Di Maria and Sanchez came for the cash and were total disasters.

youre so fecking negative at times.
its no different to working anywhere and being offered a big pay rise to move to a competitor... but im guessing you would turn that down right??
im sure the money is a factor, and it rightly should be.
But that in no way suggests that is the only reason he is willing to join.
and to throw in the Di Maria and sanchez comparisons is just lazy.... one didnt want the move from the start and the other had been off form for Arsenal and was sat on their bench for a while.
this guy did the league and CL double last season making 48 appearances in the process and was an important factor in that, and by the looks of it hasnt had to have had his arm twisted up his back like FDJ was.
He is one of the best going at what he does in regards to covering the back 4... and having seen us ship 6 goals in 2 games against lets be honest, teams we should be beating for me is a welcome addition.
Real currently have Tchouaméni, camavinga, Kroos and modric as well as Casemiro, so the likelihood his game time will take a hit......and lets be honest... heavens forbid he might actually want game time
