Back then there were garbage Umpires from most countries giving "home" decisions a LOT, one of the best things ever done in cricket was to introduce neutral and elite level Umpires, there are still bad decisions, but not the bias that there used to be. English Umpires were usually fairer than the rest, but still some made decisions that favoured the home team.
Holding kicked down the stumps due to terrible decisions in NZ, West Indies themselves had a string of poor Umpires (they didn't of course need home decisions as they were so good, but they still got them). India had some awful Umpires too as did Australia.
As for Shakoor Rana, I'm sure he made bad decisions, but nowhere near as bad as Shakeel Khan and in the incident with Gatting, I think he was in the right (even though the swearing from both parties was not required). A more classy Captain would've dealt with the situation better, but Gatting didn't and I think even he admits it now.
Rana stood well against Gatting's verbal abuse and was right not to allow match to continue until he apologized

English players were not willing to continue that 87/88 tour after Gatting/Shakoor Rana fight but they had to gain from trade deal with Pakistan and therefore Management pressurized them to stay and continue and they got bonus in return

Would an umpire even have the authority now to say that a game can't continue until a player apologises to him?
I always thought Gatting apologised because firstly he was in the wrong for that particular incident and also his captaincy was under sever pressure after some poor results.
he was in the wrong, and i think has since re-iterated his apology on that basis, however at the time it was virtually a diplomatic incident. it went above the tour management that's for sure.
Pakistani players were aggressive in 80's and 90's. Now they are meek and submissive
I agree that WI and Pakistan have lost their spark in recent years and I think SA and SL are going the same way.
In the 2000s England and India got more aggressive
Australia are good but nowhere near what they used to be. NZ have had a good few years recently, but I have a feeling that looks to be coming to an end.
Worrying times for the interest of cricket.

Pakistan had by a distance the worst umpires. Not sure how many times you need this pointing out to you.
I started watching cricket in 90's and standard of umpiring in Pakistan was good. Pakistan lost test because of bad umpiring in 99 against Australia and in 2000 against windies, there were howlers in those 2 tests
Presently, situation in Pakistan is despicable- Afflicted with floods.

Bit like some of ‘our’ Pakistan fans if you go by the Asia cup thread. Meek and submissive is being kind ffs. Deluded.

The way Rizwan, Babar and co were shaking hands with their ideal " Virat kohli", thats not the way Pakistan played cricket under Imran, Wasim and co. They sledged best of players in their era.Wasim was skinny in his early days but he sledged Merv Hughes, Vivian Richards and never spared any body.
Nah, think the players generally are ok. Even in the past whatever animosity there has been it’s usually stayed on the field - it’s fans I have an issue with. Most countries say the same. I’ve been to many India England games and they resort to dirty tactics over a game ffs. Fekk that shtt- gona call it out everytime. No doubt it offends a few woke lot but is what it is.
You seen what the Afghan fans were doing after the pak game today. Thugs. Don’t know how to behave in public and have a way to embarrass themselves often in large events. Imagine ripping seats out and throwing at opposition fans because you lost a game of cricket ffs…. Same with fans targeting a guy with a turban to his head because he dropped a catch ffs.

PCB should tell ICC to suspend Afghan cricket team for a certain period. Thats the only way to teach them some manners
England squad for Test series in Pakistan:
Ben Stokes, James Anderson, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes, Will Jacks, Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Mark Wood.
No specialist spinner outside Leach so Livingstone or Jacks will be second spinner
Lees dropped then, rightfully so but he will be frustrated that Crawley is retained. Jennings is most likely but does Duckett fit the profile more for this new side.
Livingstone is an interesting choice but asking him to fulfil a second spinner role just isn't something we can ask of him. As a white ball specialist, I don't think he can bowl 25 overs in a day at the level required. Jacks at least has been bowling a bit in FC cricket for Surrey and definitely fits into Bazball with the bat and would be a strong number 8. He's the next Moeen Ali apparently so makes perfect sense that we pick him over Parkinson.
