----------------------------------------------------------------------
We can hope, he has a bit of fight in him which i appreciate, but overall I think we need better players than Fred in the middle of the park
"those attackers came so deep because Casemiro found it very difficult to progress the ball when left alone in midfield"
while I think fred case might be needed in some games, I think we will struggle to progress the ball. Attackers will have to drop deeep where they are less effective .
We still need a fdj type player
An fdj type player would also allow us to manage possession and games. This is something kroos and modric did after casemiro wins possession. Otherwise we will constantly be lossing posession
I think Fred is more offensive than we’ve properly seen him for us which I guess would help massively with a quality DM next to him. But saying that you’d think a better passer and retainer of the ball like Eriksen would be better suited to compliment Casemiro’s qualities. I guess it’s weather Eriksen has the legs to play regularly but we at least now have options.
You’d think Brazil would have someone better than Fred to play in midfield but they seem to be a lot more conservative in recent years.
I think we’ll see Casemiro with Fred, Eriksen and McT through the season (unless FDJ happens which is looking very unlikely now ).
Three different players, all of which will offer something different when paired with Casemiro.
Interestingly, if you look at dribbles and ball-carrying, in terms of attempts and success rate, McT is the better choice of the three (very comfortably in front of both in terms of success rate). He also brings the aerial shield.
Eriksen is going to offer more progressive passing, and a country mile more than either of the other two creatively (although surprisingly, even he doesn’t tend to complete any more short passes than either Fred or McT, and isn’t as accurate over longer ranges).
Fred obviously knows Casemiro’s game best, and is likely to be the biggest pain in the arsse for the opposition on any given Sunday, particularly higher up the pitch.
Here’s McT vs Eriksen vs Fred last season. (Remember to toggle for per 90 mins figures.)
I think we’ll see horses for courses, as ETH has suggested.
I think it will depend on what other midfielder we bring in. At least we know Fred and Casemiro can play together.

I’m less and less convinced there’ll be another midfielder if FDJ doesn’t happen.
I have a feeling ETH will want to hang on and try again for FDJ in the winter or next summer. He seems determined to get his man.
Heard Ornstein earlier on saying that United are still in and actively trying for both Antony and Gakpo (and would sign both if the conditions were right), ready to try again for FDJ, and otherwise working on cover at RB and a backup keeper.
Heard Ornstein earlier on saying that United are still in and actively trying for both Antony and Gakpo (and would sign both if the conditions were right), ready to try again for FDJ, and otherwise working on cover at RB and a backup keeper.
Absolute madness if we get all those. I would give that a 2% chance of happening
I think the pursuit of Rabiot suggests we may go for a lower profile midfielder. But you may be right. Especially if we are reacting to the market, and say a right back that can help with ball progression becomes available - which will take some of the burden of the midfield to.

2% is pretty generous, I’d say
I wonder what the will would be like to splash on Antony (who United would most definitely be overpaying for at this stage) if Gakpo can be signed after tonight’s game?
Surely that’d be a tough sell for the board unless Ronaldo is on his way out.

I know there’s been a lot of talk about the money being there (and I believe it is, and that under the right circumstances, spending it could be sanctioned) but the transfer team and board have to be discussing priorities at this stage too.
A backup keeper could probably be picked up cheaply enough, as could ‘competition’ for Dalot.
But add in Antony and Gakpo and you’re talking another EUR150m ready to be burnt.
Jokes aside, there has to be a question about how good a challenge to Fred/McT/Eriksen you can bring in for, what, EUR40m? (Who knows - just chucking random figures about at this stage )
You can get improvements on McTominay for a few million from the Championship.
Which Chelsea outcast midfielder would you opt for when they swoop in for Frenkie? Gilmour, Kovacic or Loftus-Cheek?
Kovacic wouldn’t be an outcast for Chelsea. In a cast maybe, the bloke is a crock.
Isn’t the latest rumour Trapp? Even though the Antony price sounds stupid I really think a left footed winger would be really handy, as would a RB who isn’t shiiit.
Preferred the rumours of Sommer to Trapp.
Think Sommer doesn’t want to risk it with the WC coming which is understandable.
What’s the risk, though? He’s been the Swiss number one for years.

Fred's great.
Badly utilised, but when mctominay is shoved out to a championship club he'll probably start more often.
United need players like him.

Just what I’ve heard. Maybe he feels that the risk of not playing regularly will effect his performances.

Gilmour looked a baller until they loaned him to Norwich. Made Fabinho look like an idiot on his debut (I think)
1982, okay that makes sense.
