That “stand up if you hate” song

Why change the words? Why is it cringeworthy?

Fully agree with you Stoopo. I don't like the use of "Hate" in a football song. Yes, they are our traditional rivals, but when all is said and done, it's a football match. Let me also say "they" also have a section of fans who sang about Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight. Having said that, I suffered the embarrassment of our supporters singing Munich 58 and the runway song at Old Trafford through the 90's. Time to grow up!

Time to grow up? Time to lighten up!

The chant in question makes no reference to anyone passing away & as such is relatively harmless. It doesn't even feature any bad language.

This sort of political correctness drives me insane. Do I hate them lot? Yes!! Am I throwing bricks at anyone who supports them? No!!

I'm as happy as anyone the nastiness of the 70's & 80's has largely disappeared from our stadia. But come on, don't completely sanitise the game.

I only tend to stand up because of the herd mentality thing ..... but do think it's overall just a bit of fun. Some (many?) will hate genuinely for sure, personally I don't hate any other fans in a literal sense.

Many mates from military days supported clubs of all leagues - never an issue for them or me I ever found. Loads of pees taking out of each other - but also plenty of mutual respect and never saw a fight over it.

I just find it irrelevant to be honest. ManU are a club I dislike because of the way they have been run as a commercial business rather than a football club.

I don’t hate them or their fans. Pity is more apt in my mind.

I don’t really hate any team but if pushed Chelsea would be my choice because of the way they kicked Eddie Gray off the park in the FA Cup final and replay.

Hate is a strong emotion and standing up to sing that song just doesn’t do it for me. I’d far sooner cheer the Glazers for the direction they are taking the club.

Just my opinion of course.

Being one off those that went to games more in the 70's/80's I can say it's nowhere as near as bad as it was!..

Most these day's don't know how bad it was!..

But, after growing up a little and moving into the times when they're trying to get hate out off the game,(and other things!)I'm thinking like may Ma and Pa did, its rather childish!..

Yep I was once a long time ago a child, but back in my day I got a crack that let me know I was doing wrong!..

Like everything, things change and the way things are these days with war and everything, it's time to move on and trying to get on with what's left of life!..

Sadly we know that will never happen!..

What, and I thought I was the only one, mind a Regiment with a mixture off mainly Leeds, Newcastle, Sunderland and the odd Manchester,(both!)and Liverpool, it wasn't alway's easy!.

For cringeworthy, see Leeds fans calling them "United".

Beggars belief.

Yeah, agreed, hate is a strong word but like all words it depends on the context in which it is used. As part of a footie chant to wind up the opposition, I can't see the problem. Just got to be sensible about language, that's all.

And yes, White, agree entirely on the use of "United" by all and sundry, particularly the tv numpties. Can't imagine a Leeds fan would do that!

Tbh, I can't stand Ole Rednose, Roy Keane and all the "class of '92", Ronaldo, etc., but I don't hate them. There's no club that gets up my nose more than Man U, but I don't think that was the case until Ferguson took over.

to be honest that song just annoys me - I feel I have to stand up, I don't and I can't see what's going on - just distracts me from the game

to be honest, don;t even mind 'united' these days... find it total comedy gold when they get beat, and don't really want to see them winning anything - think all that 'hating', tribal rubbish seems a bit pointless in the sceme of things

on a side note, for comedy value, if they do lose, (Brentford best for a long time) I'll go routing for every interview I can where I can see Neville or Keane rattled about it

got pals who support a range of teams, wapsapp group full of banter, brilliant, wouldn;t waste my time hating anyone or anything
