Why don’t Europe have similar costs then? Didn’t the French government put a cap on their energy that is significantly lower than ours? Of course the war was gonna effect energy costs (even though we don’t rely on Russia for it) but the government could and should be doing far more to help like other countries have.
If only we had a government who would fight for the ordinary people, eh? More chance of pigs flying I suppose.

I agree with this but what is the plan from Labour? I've heard nothing from Starmer.
France price cap won’t last forever. It’s got nothing to do with having a Tory government. It doesn’t matter which incompetent moron is calling the shots, this is only going to get worse. Western governments cannot control the price of wholesale energy.
That’s because Starmer is a cuuunt who has literally no policies. The man has the most corrupt government to beat and he just says nothing and plays football occasionally.
It would cost the government over £100b more to freeze energy prices than it cost them to pay the country’s wages throughout the pandemic. How much of a financial chasm do we want to dig for ourselves here?

This.
Nothing more to add really.
I am more concerned with the fact that some people in my family cant begin to imagine how they will pay this hike, and are dreading their future. It causes the uninsulated in this crisis fear and worry and a sense of complete despair, despite working honestly for years previously, paying the mortgage, the bills, the council tax, putting food on the table, and keeping people warm in the winter etc.
Combine this with 20% inflation, rising interest rates, and no committed message from yes, our own GVT, that they will intervein. Its the eqivelent of taking on a second mortgage.
Losing your home, being made homeless and even going through bankruptcy, with Court orders served to pay debts and even having your kids taken into care is a massive personal crisis that working people should not have to endure. And being told by your own PM that your capitulation is a price the working poor and not so poor in the UK each have to endure and is worth paying to help the Ukrainian people is an absolute kick in the nuts. Many would actually be dead if this really was the outcome of all this.
This will end very badly indeed.

Capitalism has failed the masses. I'm really expecting civil unrest on the streets on Britain this winter.
It's a crisis long in the making and is very much made far worse because of the Tories.
Through their financial mismanagement spanning well over a decade many people in the UK simply don't have the spare disposable income to cope with this. Wages have stagnated for many while those at the top have seen record incomes.
The UK could've also transitioned more than it has to renewables and sured up it's infrastructure (not just energy) to cope with many of the problems to come.
The world is fecked, the UK is fecked and it goes way beyond one truly awful and corrupt political party but they compound the issues massively.
When all this is over, someone, or some people, will be extremely rich because of it.
I don't know the answer to rising energy costs.
I do know that we are right to support Ukraine every way we can.

No, it means a better government.
I can absorb the price increase but what that will mean is less visits to the pub, restaurants, takeaways etc. If other people do the same then there's going to be reduced hours/job losses there. It's a downward spiral.
Surely now is the time for the government to step in and say energy is a basic right and that companies should not be profiting from it?
It’s going to be painful but if Europe can hold on through this winter, Putin will have played his trump card and failed.
Subsequent winters will become easier as alternative sources are developed and alternative supply is shared.
Easy to say of course and there’s some real problems ahead for low income families, but at the other end of the tunnel is the end to any reliance on Russia and their economy will tank.
