Speaking from a Chelsea fan perspective, we have put up with a lot of pretty dull football over the years but it has led to success and ultimately those highs are what I remember. It's all well and good enjoying the spectacle of free flowing attacking football but I wouldn't trade the memories of our successes for greater entertainment on the day. I have even taken pride in our club's unfashionable alternative football identity.

However if you grind out games week in week out and it ends up with mediocre results then it's very hard to put up with. So I imagine many spurs fans will be fine with less attractive football as long as it leads to quantifiable success.

I'd give my right arm for a boring 1-0 win right now

I wouldn't say we are boring to watch but it can be a difficult watch at times. When we break though it's brilliant.

How many teams are playing exciting expansive football? Not that many.

The Brighton game was always going to be a weird one. Not many will pick up points there this season. Spurs had a well documented tough build up to the game and we're missing one of our most creative players.

Results are what matter though and that seems to be going okay. I'm not worried.

The issue is what success could it lead to, never going to be PL or CL so that leaves the FA cup or Carabao and they are a lottery the luck of the draw, hope a few big hitters get knocked out early, so is it worth putting up with ?

It’s a marathon not a sprint as the boring saying goes but it’s true

We have a squad and manager who will be there or there abouts for top 4 at the end of the season

It’s the modern game…. top 4 is the aim as that’s where the money is and where the best players want to play

We are a boring watch at the moment but we are missing a vital cog in our forward play and Kane and son have hardly hit the ground but surely one of them will

We do score goals though but that’s different to playing decent footy

However where did the decent footy get us under Poch…..same trophy count but hard to argue that I at least enjoyed the games more as we pinned teams back and dominated matches

We’ve played 9 games this season, which have included smashing 4 past Southampton and 6 past Leicester. In 2022 only Man City have scored more PL goals than Tottenham, so I do think this is getting a bit overblown because of a handful of turgid, gritty performances.

We all want our team to win every game while playing beautiful football. We also all want to win the euromillions and get a nosh off from Margot Robbie on the same evening, but life doesn’t work like that. Spurs are capable of playing free scoring football, but we aren’t quite clicking at the moment and as such we are having to be more pragmatic and grind things out. If it’s like this game in game out for the rest of the season then questions will be asked, but personally I think we’ll click more as the season goes on, just as we did last season once we got into our rhythm under Conte. In the meantime we need to ensure points on the board, and 20 from 9 games having played Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham and Brighton away isn’t bad going.

I think a lot of this spawns from the fact you have Conte in charge and playing free flowing attacking football is not his forte and he has never hid from that fact.

over the next two years what do you think will qualify as doing well enough to put up with what may be (again may not but in this scenario im looking at non attractive football).

Say for example 3rd place, I thikn most Spurs fan will take 3rd, maybe not so much "happy" but will accept it .
Would the football need to improve if the team remain as the 3rd best team in england ? or would you tolerate less attractive football for always finishig 3rd or would he need to deliver trophies?

IMO he needs to be careful like I said Spurs fans expect a certain brand of football to be played and if the results start to falter then the fans will afford him less patience.

Of course we put up with as long as the results are fine.

This old chestnut. We've done it about 15 more times than you, plus we won trophies too. You're the ones on a long trophy drought that needs to prove themselves.

We did it year in year out for many many years, when we didn't win trophies finishing second or fourth made no difference. Don't see why spurs are any different, 15 years without a trophy is a total embarassment for a supposedly 'big club'.

ok this thread is about the style of football, feel free to create a thread of your own about a difference subject if you want.

Well, because spurs and arsenal were coming from different places. Arsenal suffered a decline from the mid 00s and were expected to be title and trophy contenders therefore their lack of success was judged harshly and top 4 was expected of them and hence the mockery as they increasingly laboured to finish top 4. Spurs by contrast have only begun qualifying for the CL on a somewhat regular basis more recently and therefore it is not taken for granted in the same way that it was for Arsenal 15 years ago.
