Souness on Martinez

Yes, one of my pet hates.

Ex-pro’s getting paid to talk nonsense just because they are ex-pro’s.

Some of the punditry out there is beyond awful.

Wonder how VVD’s height is working out for him?

On that, Carragher was willing to judge Martinez after two games, but said a few weeks ago that we can’t judge VVD this season after eight poor performances; Jamie clearly didn’t watch Liverpool last season…

What was also bizarre was him wanting credit for calling Pogba a pudding. He seems very proud of himself, the plum!
So how long does it take for a player to get found out?
Name me the last CB that had light bolt speed?
It’s ok to say you got it wrong, but no, we gotta wait til Martinez has that one bad game before he screams ‘see I told you’

What we are seeing in real time is the game passing somebody by, and they too arrogant to see it.

I have liked Souness over the years but he really can’t admit when he’s wrong, can he?

Tbh I like Carragher as a pundit. While thankfully it looks he was massively wrong on Martinez, I could see where he was coming from at the time.

I don’t think he’ll have any problem admitting he was wrong if Martinez keeps this up.

" This fella Ronaldo is a cod. He's a disgrace to the game. That's what I believe." That was Irish pundit Eamon Dunphy in 2008. Sometimes pundits get wedded to an opinion on a player, and no amount of convincing play won't change their opinion.

What was wrong with VVD last season? He had a good season after a bad injury.

He hasn't been great this season obviously but not sure why you think he also wasn't last season.

Dunphy was a clown and still is. He’s entertaining at times though. His premier league podcast with John Giles and Liam Brady is comedy gold without meaning to be.

He has been well below his best since the Pickford assault.

My point was not to turn this into a VVD article, but to create an amalgam of the hypocrisy (judging Martinez after two games, but bemoaning people writing off VVD after eight).

If you’re referring to me, I’m one of the few people in this place who can admit when he’s wrong.

I was referring to most pundits to be honest. I don’t converse much (if at all) with you to know if you admit if you are wrong or not.

Sorry, me being over sensitive there.

I think some pundits show a reasonable amount of humility tbf. Gary Neville in particular.

On the height thing, appreciate Souness specifically mentioned the English game, but you’d think the fact that the only defender to win a Ballon D’Or for nearly 30 years being 5’9” would lead to some restraint from writing him off solely due to that.

The only other two defenders to ever win it were 5’11”, so not exactly giants among men

In fairness, VVD has plenty of credit in the bank.

I was one of those who doubted Martinez at the start because of his height - really thought he'd prove to be a mistake. But the bloke just gets better with each passing game, and if anything his low centre of gravity is proving to be an advantage in many situations.

I don't judge Souness and Carragher for their initial opinions, but to refuse to budge on it against all evidence is just incredibly childish. And making that comment about Martinez not being good on the ball - either he's not watching us or he has no idea what he's watching.

Whenever I see Souness now I just cannot stop thinking about that impressionist that rips him over Pogba.

Yes that is him, he only started talking positively about him once Ronaldo left for Madrid.

He certainly does have a lot of credit, but it’s the myopia and hypocrisy that riles me up, and I do generally find Carra to be surprisingly likeable and fair. I’ve noticed a few more suspect takes this season, now that Liverpool are under performing.

Perhaps a better example would be Nunez, who hasn’t built up the significant credit that VVD has. They both still defend him to the hilt and beg for time (in fairness, as every new signing should be afforded), but were keen to grab the ducking stool after just two games for Martinez.

Judging someone after 135 minutes of footy (I think he was hooked at HT in one of the first two games) is bad enough, but as mentioned, failing to recognise and accept your potential error after an additional 1,000+ minutes of evidence to the contrary is just poor
