As much of a living legend the guy is and how amazing it would be to have him at the club I think:
1. He'll play out his contract at Galaxy and then go off and relax and do general celebrity stuff
2. The money we'd have to pay him would be ridiculous as we're paying for a big name
3. He's not a proven coach, I've no doubt that he wouldn't be an excellent coach, but he doesn't have much experience in the coaching role.
If money was unlimited and there wasn't other celebrity distractions I'd be all over it.
Sven- ''We will give him a whistle and he can go out on the training pitch straight away.''
Good old Sven
The name David Beckham will bring in millions to the club, much more than it would cost to get him here and pay his wages and Sven and the owners obviously know that.
stunningfox I didn't think about that side of things, good point. Although, I think we'd have to pay him at least 50K per week as a minimum, equating to £2,600,000 per year - would we see this amount of money returned?
I am sure he would attract sponsorship for the Club from around the world and of course you will have all the extra shirt sales and other merchandise emblazened with his name on it, not sure what it will all amount to but i'm sure it would outweigh whatit would cost having him here on the books
Blackpoolfox I would certainly buy a mug from the shop with Beckham on it for a fiver
haha to be fair, I would be the first one at the shop getting 'beckham' on my shirt.
stunningfox is absolutely right; and forget about the local market - the international market can still go nuts for Beckham.
Incidentally, this is not the first time I've heard this rumour and Sven does seem to be very keen for Beckham to join back up with him. Could it happen? Maybe!
Beckham has set up and operates a number of soccer schools - He clearly needed to have developed his coaching skills to do this
I can't see this happening. I think the clubs keep using Sven's links to Beckham to keep us in the news and create interest in Leicester City overseas.
However, I think the owners would try and get him, and you never know. He's always highly respected by his fellow players and that's the biggest challenge as a coach - to get players on side.
I'd quite like this to happen, if only for the reason that Becks would look uber cool in the dug out!!!
I think he'll either settle in America or do something similar at Man Utd or a London club though.
Is it April Fools' Day? Beckham might make sort of sense for shirt sales etc (not interested) but the idea of him playing in the Championship is laughable. First of all, why should he play at that level ? And secondly, the opposition would kick him off the pitch. As for coaching, he has not proven track record. Don't want him. Don't need him!
Beckham has set up and operates a number of soccer schools - He clearly needed to have developed his coaching skills to do this
--------------------------------------------------------------
He put his name to the Beckham Academy - not sure he "operated" them or needed advanced coaching skills to do this. One of the two centres, Greenwich failed a couple of years ago and closed.
Longtime I couldn't disagree with you more...just because he hasnt coached does that make it a bad appointment?what about Powell etc? Steve Thompson at blackpool?nosey up at Celtic?alley mccoist was only good at answering quiz questions it they took a punt as do many other clubs on untryed coaches, managers etc...if they didn't the game would collapse!! I wouldn't mind becks here in whatever role..player,coach,tea chimp..the owners want the Asian market support n who bigger/better than becks!!
what are the odds of Steve McClaren ending up in Leicester as Sven's coach in the not too distant future!
Before you all go, NO WAY etc etc.
He was coach to Jum smith at Derby in the 90's when Derby were up there with us under Martin O'Neill,
He went on to coach Man United under Sir Alex, when they won the Champions League and the treble,
He was coach at England under Sven...
It about as likely as David Beckham coming here!
Gloria - good shout on McClaren. We need a coach and he has a great track record.
I rate him highly as a coach. I do NOT rate him as a manager!!!
McClaren would also be a great interpreter. Would love to hear him speaking Japanese to Yuki !
Sky reported there have been 40 applicants for the Forest manager's job.
I certainly don't think this is lazy journalism.
A lot of this rests on what Beckham wants to do. If he wants to play and that is it he won't come here and I could see him going to QPR to get into Team GB for 2012 or maybe to PSG if he lets Victoria have her way.
If however he does want to be coach, I think there's a good chance he would come here. However, if he does say he wants to go into coaching, I could see someone like QPR come in for him with a similar offer to ours. But maybe the link with Sven might be strong enough to persuade him to come here instead. Certainly if he was interested to come here and coach I think it would be a good avenue to peruse and I think he has a hell of a lot of experience and, with the managers he's worked with, he must have so much football knowledge that he could offer the team and some new ideas on the training pitch. But his training camps have used his name rather than coaching abilities. I think the only experience he does have is last year during the World Cup.
Also any expenses on wages would be matched and probably bettered through shirt sales, sponsorship etc. I would just hope that its more coaching than playing because I'm not sure whether he has the legs to play in the Championship or whether he is still better than what we have. Sven's comments do suggest that it will be more coaching orientated.
We have been here before, and I for one still say no, no, no.
This has nothing to do with strengthening the team and everything to do with flogging shirts to SE Asians. It would be a media circus and a horrible distraction. I believe that Sven is playing along with the story because he doesn't have much choice.
Which isn't to say I don't admire Beckham as a once-great player and a remarkably grounded guy, because I do.
But no, no, no.
You are all assuming that Sven genuinely wants Beckham at the club. I suspect that he only says these things to keep the owners happy – showing willing avoids a disagreement that there's no need for. He knows Beckham is going to say no, so there's no risk involved in him making the noises the owners want to hear.
Remember what Victoria said?....."Can you honestly see me in Leicester Sven?"
No thanks me duck, we don't need either of you.
Robster:
I wondered when that would come up. My understanding is that that turned out to be a misquote (despite many national newspapers running with it).
Well, I say misquote... It was said, but apparently it should be attributed to Nancy Dell'Olio rather than Victoria Beckham. I understand Victoria's never commented on the subject.
Didn't realise that you and Vicky were so close DM. I can't understand why Nancy would be saying that though, or was that a joke?
I get the impression it was merely a flippant remark at a dinner or an awards ceremony or something like that.
Either way, I'm now refusing to vote for her in Strictly Come Dancing.
