i just remembered Phillips plays for Man City now lol

Even so, the guy has played 54 mins of football this year. Only 14 mins in the EPL/CL.

I know England have taken risks on players returning from injury before but they're usual the big players like Beckham or Rooney, not a Kalvin Phillips type.

He has been. But he's hardly played for a year. I heard a stat that he's played just under 7 games (about 620 mins I think) since the beginning of December last year.

Fully match fit, he makes the squad no question. 7 games in a year and I think he's incredibly fortunate.

I don’t think it’s an issue. He won’t start but will be useful as a player to come in and help tighten up the midfield. Plus all the cm options are crap.

For all the complaints, aside from maybe Tomori. Who has been left out who is a serious omission?

Club teams regularly bring players straight into a team having not played for months. Why is it any different for a national team?

Bringing two players to the WC who are getting called up for the first time since 2019(?) Is a pretty uncharacteristic move for Southgate. Can't really see maddison getting many minutes and Wilson being a crock is obviously concerning.

Gallagher a bit of a weird one - feels like fraud-prowse (set-pieces) or another CF would have been more useful.

Can obviously um and ah about Dier making it over Tomori/Guehi but it's hardly a surprise and neither of them would have started so doesn't feel hugely consequential.

A national team which has less of a defined and complex system, with less fitness requirements too

Slow down. The squad's only just been announced and people are rushing to complain like there is no Tomori.

I’d have taken DCL over Gallagher. Just to chuck on to try and score a header.
