I'm surprised you're not looking forward to the world cup sandy. I know that it feels a bit weird and interrupting a domestic season isn't ideal but ultimately, it is a world cup. Once it gets going I reckon more people will jump on board.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I used to really enjoy the world cup, but I just don't like International football these days. Practically every footballer gets capped, when it was the case you had to be very decent to get picked to play for your country. The amount of very average England players that have 50 caps in the modern era is astonishing. Dier and Maguire both in the Englsnd squad, shows how low the bar is these days.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can't stop supporting your country just because the "bar is low" surely? That's fickle
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes I can mate. Really couldn't care who won the WC. I shall watch a bit, but I doubt I will watch any full 90 minute game.
I was at Wembley in 1966, and was a very enthusiastic England supporter back then. But I have long since not cared about International football. Most matches are incredibly boring.

I'd like England to do well, but the winter world cup, it being in Qatar and having Southgate bore us to rears means I'm not overly fussed about this world cup.
Was far more invested in the cricket yesterday, that was the main world cup for me

enjoyed that cricket final! at one stage, it got real hairy

20/20 stuff is not cricket. I like Test match cricket, but that nonsense. No thanks. Never watched a ball.

Come Sandy, you must admit that's a bit over generalised statement? It isn't true either.
I agree with Strike that some meaningless Internationals coming in right between domestic games, are not only time wasters but dour most of the times.
But WC games are some of the best I have experienced mate.
It will be interesting how Qatar manage this tournament with the soaring heat of over 40o C that they have experienced, where some workers have died from the heat?
This WC does have ring of hollowness...with working conditions of migrants staring at us at the back of each game hosted....Sadly money is the motivator factor for FIFA
Looking forward to seeing what defence Safegate picks lol

I am English and would NEVER hope England go out early in a World Cup. WTF is wrong with people.
If England ever won a World Cup again, it would be one kd the best things to ever happen to this country since our generation has been alive.
I mean, even if you feel like that, you'd probably get a free day off if we won it!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stopped caring about England when Sven got sacked, got a bit back in to at the last World Cup but we bottled it again. Didn’t give a hoot that we lost the Euro finals last year.

Dier and Maguire. The Chuckle Brothers.
Hope England go out early so lane gets a rest. Don’t give a f a k about England and certainly don’t give a fa k about this corrupt cup
When you look at the quality of our squad compared to the teams from 1998 to 2006, it's so much weaker yet Southgate has got us to a semi and a final of the last two major tournaments. The criticism he gets for not taking the handbrake off is completely absurd. We've got such poor options at the back that he has to play with three and two holding to ensure our weaker players aren't exposed. It's worked so far so why come for him now? He's our most successful England manager since Alf Ramsey and he deserves more respect than he's getting.
Maybe if he'd gone for it against Italy we'd have come out winners but we might just as easily have been blown away by Italian counters. Surely he's owed some trust?
Oh, and before any of you remind me that Conte also plays a cautiously but I criticise him, it's different. We can change personnel at club level. Southgate has to work with what he's got.

Spurs. A timely break, and time for a recharge of batteries.
----------------------------------------------------------------
It's not a break! Just because you're not bothering with the World Cup doesn't mean our players aren't. It will be another draining round of fixtures with no break beforehand and little rest afterwards.

Conte's had two windows to sort out problematic positions at the club but has chosen to spend in areas we're already strong in (Richy when Kane, Son and Kulu are starters, Bissouma who also warms the bench).
It doesn't matter what personnel Conte has, his system is always cautious and defensive first, even when he has the best teams in their respective leagues at his disposal. With Southgate you get the impression he's playing this way because he doesn't have a choice. It probably represents our best chance of doing well in a short, seven game tournament. I don't think it translates well in a league format.
Anyway, some of you lot are criticising Southgate for playing dull football but back Conte for doing the same thing. So really everyone is being a little contradictory.

Most of our players will only play three matches. Some will be sat on the bench. In a normal season, they would be playing another half a dozen Prem games up until Xmas. So will be easier.
Fridge has out done himself - stick with Southgate a man who has won nothing and been in charge for 4 years whilst holding us back, but ditch Conte who has won titles with 3 different sides and has us 4th and in the CL last 16.
Southgate has had a guy who will become Englands greatest ever goal scorer, top quality in midfield and a great array of wingbacks. He has also had the benfit of a home tournament and a World Cup run that saw us play zero elite sides.
Conte has had 2 transfer windows with t-Rex arms got us 4th last year and we’re still 4th now - Fridges verdict: he has to go

Top quality in midfield? Rice, Philips and Henderson isn't quality. He had a quality striker and then semi decent forwards in Sterling, Saka, Foden etc and truly awful CBs.
