Armbands...armbands....armbands is all I'm hearing this morning

Gotta say...couldn't give a flying fck about any of it

Can understand why the FA are taking the stance they are
Can understand why FIFA don't want any team wearing anything that conveys a "political message"

Complete clusterfck this World Cup, FIFA wholly to blame...but the decision was made 12 year ago, and no-one boycotted......let's just get fcking on with it

The aspect that is annoying me the most is the fans who think that tey should get special treatment while in Qatar. The whole beer tent/ no beer tent decision was farcical that it was a last minute thing. This is a country with strict rules on alcohol, we shouldn't expect a country to change it's ways just to suit football fans.

The same people shouting about not having a drink at a game are probably the same ones who want all foreigners to "respect are culture" when they come to the UK.

The whole is Qatar a suitable country to host the World Cup and everything that comes with it should have been part of the debate when the selction was done. The simple fact is we are in it now. It is underway. Money put the teams in this situation, it will not be memorable for many fans as many have chosen not to go.

Get on with it, get it over and done with and hopefully FIFA have learned that the World Cup is an event for the fans as well as the players with so many factors to consider.

Hopefully it financially ruins FIFA and they have to go cap in hand to the big international sides. We might then get some decent world cups again.

I’m all for sharing the tournament around and giving smaller nations a chance, but do it somewhere with some football culture.

They could solve the whole thing by putting a roster in place - Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, Rest of the world. Add a rule that the country cannot be in conflict when the WC is awarded or the year before it is due to start ( with a suitable back up option ). Judge sustainability and factor in human rights.

Do that and Russia and Qatar don’t happen and we are probably watching a cracking World Cup in Egypt, Chile, Switzerland, Australia

totally get your point and I do think people should be respectful of different cultures...

but...

to be eligible to host the world cup the Qatari FA/government made certain promises that they were expected to keep. Their last minute decision to go back on the beer thing is, I would suggest, is likely a breach of confidence but is certainly a breach of trust. It appears to be a recurring theme that they have consistently broken promises around this world cup and the whole thing has been a bit of a disaster.

We've obviously heard about the paid fans getting their allowance removed days before they were due to leave to attend, but perhaps more concerning to me was that in 2010 they made a commitment to establishing a woman's team and, while a team was established, there was clearly no intention of this being anything other than lip service. The team remain unranked by FIFA, have barely played in five years and most likely won't exist by the end of next year.

I disagree on the Russia part. Ok right now is not the best time but they were excellent hosts, are a football loving nation with great infrastructure. How they won the bid is the challenging aspect of it.

As to the football....

It's worth noting that FIFA intend to increase Asia's places for the next WC from 4 to 8. I'm going to assume Qatar just had a bad day yesterday because they were dreadful. I hope this isn't indicative of the standard of Asian teams at this tournament.

As for today...the 4 o'clock game is the most interesting one, although I expect the Wales v USA game to be a decent one. Hoping to see Dylan Levitt get a start as there's a midfield berth available with Joe Allan being injured.

I tried to stay away from that whole thing because my point stands - the time to debate this was when it was being awarded. I do not disagree with any of what you are saying but are we honestly surprised? The moment it was awarded it was too late. Who are we to criticise going against Oath's when we have a Westminster government who does it daily.

FIFA are responsible for this

I think USA could do well in the WC but they need to beat Wales. USA never really have stand out players but are always a solid team unit.

The winners of this group get an easy route but for second place it's extremely challenging

I won't pretend that I follow them closely but I get the feeling the US aren't quite as strong as they used to be. A few exciting younger players but maybe a tournament too early for them?

On an unrelated note, GvB apparently getting his jotters today.

Going back to the late “alcohol ban”, 2 points here … First, IMO FIFA knew this was coming, just shamelessly waited until all the ordinary fans had booked/arrived before confirming it. Second, I wouldn’t even have a problem with the “ban” (respecting Qatari customs etc), IF that’s what it was. In reality they’re allowing alcohol in the stadia IF you’ve paid enough for corporate hospitality. How about that for hypocrisy, Infantino?

great day ? na not for me.

He deserved to lose his job. Gio seemed like a very decent guy. I would have preferred had done well enough this season to avoid it but such is life.

Gio very almost wrote himself in scottish football history and gve us a journey we will never forget.

I take zero pleasure in him failing this year and wish him all the best.

What some don't realise is that breaching trust is an integral part of some cultures. As is bribery and corruption. Some societies just accept it and don't understand why it is a problem.

As for FIFA, fck them but I imagine any loss for anyone will be played out in football politics and covered up.

As for Qatar, an article I read had the stadiums as a tiny % of the overall infrastructure investment which was more targeted at bringing the country up to UAE standard.

Finally, just out of interest CS, did the army have beer rations when they were in Afghanistan?

In terms of the alcohol ban .... they are still serving alcohol at the designated areas are they not?

They said from the get go that it wouldnt be served at or near the games but there will be designated areas where people can drink?

posted on 21/11/22

Silver to answer your last question there - it depended on where you were. On some camps up north with proper infrastructure there was a bar with a 2 can limit. There were restrictions around use of the bar based on things. Most other places was zero alcohol. At Christmas it was eased but some took it too far and got rat arrsed to the ban was put back on for New Year. In my small team we had a guy going home to Belfast who was kind enough to bring back with him several bottles of "spring water" which we enjoyed over New Year with some fizzy juice while playing poker.

It is mental anyone booking to go anywhere in the ME and expecting 'a good bevvy'.

As mental as wandering into someone's yard in the US and not expecting to be met by a firearm; wandering into the 'wrong' part of myriad towns and finding trouble; wandering into Greenwich Village and not expecting to see men kissing; going to a Glasgow derby and not expecting to hear naughty songs; goig to Aberdeen fish market and not expecting it to smell of fish etc.
