David Baddiel apology to Jason Lee

After scoring I think a wonder goal that proved to be a fluke Jason Lee's goals dried up, this is my recollectiontion of events.
He was universally referred to by Forest fans as Pineapple Head which he didn't like, that of course made it worse, plus he wasn't putting the ball in the back of the net.

This is the era of Chalky White jokes etc.

It was more than the 1 sketch they did, think there was pizz taking every wk out of Jason.
The apology was welcomed but 20 years too late from Baddiel, and he looked uncomfortable in that mtg

I have felt uncomfortable about this for some time to be honest.

Lee stepped into the team that year after the sale of Collymore and Campbell hurting his back, scored 6 goals by the October but once the fantasy football started the song etc it was a feature on match day and Lee definitely faded.

Not sure looking back our fans/club did enough to protect him from the abuse, I guess it was seen as harmless fun but it didn’t prove to be harmless as impacted on a young man’s career.

I have become more aware in recent years the cultural and religious significance of dreadlocks in the Rasta culture. Also aware of what friends do to conceal hair often painful time consuming process just to not stand out for fear of similar abuse.

We are used to seeing England take the knee to protest against footballers suffering racial abuse and applaud them. We then sing a song written by two guys to have racially abused a footballer!

Football can be a confusing mess sometimes….

Yes it was seen as harmless micky taking at the time, I've been called worse thing in my time imo.

ok for RB because you are not a member of a disadvantaged group and are not accustomed to facing discrimination.
I was the only pakistani in my class and I tell it was very lonely place and then to suffer abuse on top.

David Baddiel tries to justify it by saying that they showed Peter Beardsley as Quasimodo. Jason Lee points out that was also wrong. May be funny to an environment that thrives on p*ss taking but not to the individual or his family

I'm a northerner living/working in Bristol, I've been called a Northern Bar steward on numerous occasions, plus various other statements designed to exclude/marginalise one.
So perhaps while I didn't understand then I do now!
