The reality is, the NHS is a failing system, and not just for nurses.
Increasing nurse's pay (and an already tidy pension package) by 18% only makes conditions for nurses and patients worse.
Unions aren't doing a very good job of protecting their members, in fact they're pishing the public off by asking for ludicrous increases.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What an absolute load of tory bollox
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the public are asking the GVT to pay the striking health workers. As I have stated, they will pay out eventually if the GVT want to survive. Just like Thatcher did. She paid out a whopping 25% across the board. She had to promise that to get elected.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're surely not suggesting that these wages will be increased just before a general election is called RBW! <cynic smiley>

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if they did agree to the increase and then an election is called soon after. Their final gambit.
t clearly is a bad salary as a third need food banks to live and their wage hasn't increased with inflation for years hence why they are desperate and stricking you absolute tw-t. The fact you know 2 people who are nurses and don't live off food banks means f-ck all.
----------------------------
to be fair I cant think that many pay increases have risen with inflation for a large % of the working population, not just nurses and the likes.

It’s not the same situation as it was in the 70s though.
I don’t think nurses should be allowed to strike, same with the police.
A 19% increase is ludicrous though, pay rises should never be set during high inflationary times. The pay rises are not temporary, they’re permanent.
The average UK nurse salary is just under £35,000 a year.
London average nurse salary is mid £40,000 range.
The NHS is a mess and will always be a mess due to its sheer size and abundance of middle-management, bloated processes et cetera.
Respect to the job that all of our healthcare professionals do for our society and I am not against a pay rise but not at 19%. Something like 8% for me.
As ever, these things are very complicated with a lot of repercussions; it’s far too simplistic to think ‘yes just pay them more’.
Oh and what’s the average salary of a police officer? That’s right, notably less than nurses - £28,500.
Ever wonder why there aren’t surveys about how many police officers are skipping meals and/or using food banks? It’s as if there is a strong, well-funded force at play pushing its point with a lot of campaign funding via the media….
Can we people stop saying nurses were over worked during COVID. I work at 2 hospitals before during and after COVID the vast majority of nurses were working in hospital wards the had 0 to barely any patients. Plus yes we were all concerned about COVID in the beginning but let's be honest working with full PPE for a virus that's not any worse than I flu hardly makes you a super hero.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
it isn't bad. In fact its good.
@WWSPD - a few comments on his points.
- of course 19% is part of their negotiation but that doesn’t make it any less ludicrous. The govt is using the independent pay review as an excuse / negotiation stance and the union is using 19%. I would say that 19% is far more ludicrous than using an independent body’s recommendation
- he doesn’t ever mention the police - why not?
- he says that people are using the ‘blood on their hands for striking’ well yes if healthcare goes on strike, people will suffer that’s the point of every strike. Which is why, I’m my opinion they shouldn’t be allowed to strike
- I disagree with him that we cannot support a pay rise whilst simultaneously saying that they cannot strike. Again I reference the police.
Ultimately they are two vital, life-saving public services that we pay for. People not getting trains is one thing but having police on strike is something else entirely, as with healthcare.
They’re really not paid that badly to be perfectly honest. But what I would support and what I think is a much better idea is for the government to fund healthcare education costs. This would serve to attract more people to the profession and remove the burden of student loans entirely.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not the same situation as it was in the 70s though.

What I find depressing is that people expect a duty of care from medical care professionals (which many provide to the best of their abilities) but won’t extend that duty of care to these same medical professionals and the terrible conditions they are working in.

t clearly is a bad salary as a third need food banks to live and their wage hasn't increased with inflation for years hence why they are desperate and stricking you absolute tw-t. The fact you know 2 people who are nurses and don't live off food banks means f-ck all.

to be fair I cant think that many pay increases have risen with inflation for a large % of the working population, not just nurses and the likes.

What an absolute load of tory bollox
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the public are asking the GVT to pay the striking health workers. As I have stated, they will pay out eventually if the GVT want to survive. Just like Thatcher did. She paid out a whopping 25% across the board. She had to promise that to get elected.

What I find depressing is that people expect a duty of care from medical care professionals (which many provide to the best of their abilities) but won’t extend that duty of care to these same medical professionals and the terrible conditions they are working in.
