Does anyone think that the fact that international breaks are seen as a hindrance to domestic football, with players withdrawn through "injury" and most of the matches not treated as serious, has had an affect on the quality of teams at this tournament? With the amount of money in the domestic game, and lack of in the international game, clubs, media and fans have almost tried to get rid of international football in a sense in recent years.

Does this affect players' attitudes towards international football, their performance levels and team cohesion due to lack of playing together?

Everyone moans about international breaks, don't want their players going away with the national team but then also want and expect a strong national team when it comes to major tournaments?

Thoughts?

It’s an interesting take, but I feel most players still love playing for their country, although there’s always a bad apple like White kicking about somewhere.

Ultimately though, I think there is simply too much football, full stop, and this lowers performance both domestically and internationally.

They probably do love playing for their country at tournaments, just probably not in the build up matches, nations league etc during the season. But that's what creates a team. Difficult to just turn up to a tournament with a bunch of players and expect them to gel. Club teams can take a long time to start gelling as a team when there is a load of new signings. Takes a long time for tactics to bed in as well. Football has become so tactically complex that it can be difficult to implement to the same level on the international stage. So we are left watching something that is a level or two below club level.

Agreed that there’s probably too much football on during the season (there’s even a betting company’s ad airing currently poking fun at this). Sometimes indeed, less is more. I love watching the teams I follow but come the end of the domestic season even I feel I need a break from football these past few years and as much as I enjoy a Summer tournament, I’ve actually found I’m glad when it’s a year that doesn’t have a Euros/ WC so I can just switch off from it all for a few weeks.

Given how underwhelming England and in fact the whole Euros have been this year, I think I’d have been happier with no tournament (unless England actually win it!)

I think most players should and do want to play for their country. Ask any of the ones that got told they weren’t going to Germany. I’m not saying I want another ‘WC 2022’ mid season tournament but the players didn’t look as tired as they have done during these Euros

The players being tired is a separate issue. More that the players hardly play together in this team the whole season, they don't train together and have very limited time under the national manager.

Stick England in the PL, playing every week together, they would gel and tactics could properly be implemented on the training field.

Stick Man City in the euros when the only time the players actually get to play together during a season is some friendlies and a few qualifiers. I doubt Pep would be able to implement his style on the team effectively with that little time playing together.

The emphasis is on the TEAM not individuals. It is something people keep needing reminded of.

I'm only an England / France / Spain / Netherlands fan from Algeria but even I can admit that the euros draw was rigged so that the quarter final winners would reach the semis.
