The way I see it is that there are two kinds of people who believe conspiracy theories. The very poorly educated and the mentally unstable.

The infamous 9/11 thread was full of daft conspiracies mostly from Liverpool posters and the Goonies.

Imagine that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did I recall you stating you'd driven past? Or is it my brain playing tricks on me (happening more often nowadays). Some people didn't believe you for some reason but I bet the same people believed in this Covid conspiracy nonsense!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I drove past the Pentagon about two hours after the event. Maybe a bit longer but not much more. One of the major evacuation routes out of DC goes right past it, viewing down on the Pentagon itself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thought I remembered! That must have been quite surreal. I know it was strange where I was because we were flying home from Majorca to Manchester and the security when we arrived was different to the usual.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What was weird for me was going to my local pub after I got home ( a thirty minute drive took about four hours). The pub was packed with all the TV Screens on but it was eerily silent.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can imagine it would have been. Pretty sure the CL games went ahead that night but United's the next evening was postponed.

One of the few conspiracies I think has some truth to it is that the US government knew an attack was coming on or around 9/11 and let it happen so they could change up some laws and go to war... I just don't think they had any idea of the scale of it and thought it would be like the bomb attempt on the twin towers.

I think what actually happened is that competing security agencies knew something was happening, but that there was a real lack of cooperation between said agencies which led to a failure to intervene.

Snowden said as such, he was working at the NSA at the time. Apparently the bureaucracy in those agencies and their competitive goals was put ahead of national security.

What will be the next big thing? Moving on from covid and vaccines etc. Flat earth not really cool just now. Think it's bad now?

Imagine when AI and more sophisticated deepfakes become more prevalent. Literally won't be able to tell what is real and what isn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mobile phones. People will be shocked to learn we can be tracked. Also the effect on the brain.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People already know the former, don’t they?

And they’ve been talking about the latter since at least 3G (which was supposedly going to have us all on oncology wards within 12 months) was rolled out. Didn’t happen with 3G, but it’ll DEFINITELY happen with 4G! (OK, it didn’t happen with 4G, but it’s DEFINITELY DEFINITELY going to happen with 5G! Bookmark this.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

To be fair i do wonder what the long term effects of mobile phones could be. Especially on young kids.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The medium, never mind long, term effects of being constantly distracted by notifications and news feeds, becoming addicted to social media courtesy of the microdosing of dopamine hits it delivers, being thrown five seconds of videopap at a time for hours on end destroying attention spans, being subjected to a constraint stream of adverts and subliminal political messaging, and being constantly focussed on the screen of a device a foot from your face are all things we should be concerned about.

Relatively (and, as the science shows, absolutely) speaking the radiation being received and emitted by handheld devices is small fry (no pun intended).

It could also be the sort of warning they'd get 10 times a month and nothing usually happens. But that time it did.

I do love how insanely complex the 9/11 conspiracy theories are. High-tech "nano-thermite" to melt the steel beams somehow secretly hidden by special forces in the towers. The planes diverted to secret airbases and the passengers secretly paid off/killed without anyone noticing. A missile launched into the Pentagon. Fake planes or super-advanced holograms crashed in to the WTC.

All requiring thousands of people to collude in perfect harmony without a single hitch, whistleblower or bit of evidence left behind.

Alternatively, how the CIA would have done it: Send a couple of guys to the Middle East and pay off some Jihadis.

Hobo, by understanding is that it was treated as a serious threat by some. But the lack of cooperation with over government agencies led to a lack of clarity over just how serious the threat was and how to deal with that threat.

It’s why there are some quite well constructed conspiracies around 911, given the information that has been released over government agencies that had the perpetrators on their radar. In some way it’s understandable when you consider the vast size of these agencies and their self serving interests.

But it’s taking the position that everything was known and that all agencies were collaborating together in a manner that just doesn’t appear to be the case.

America are many things, but I don’t believe they would have actively let something like this happen on their own door step.

The Department of Homeland Security was formed as a result of the various agencies not talking to each other in an event to stop this happening again.

Nothing has changed as they still don’t.

Aren’t boomers more prone to believing conspiracies and disinformation aside from this? Maybe when the threat of death is there it jolts their brain in to working?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t think so. I’m a boomer and most of my mates are. I don’t know one who is into conspiracy theories - especially with Covid vaccines.

How about that some football organisations have certain agendas to make certain results or outcomes happen?

In the PL they must be focused on what is most financially beneficial to them? In some way at least? Who gets CL and the like affect this for example? Or there is no impact at all?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That sounds quite a plausible story.

I'd be cautious of leaning too heavily on Snowdon as a source though. For one thing, he had no connection with the NSA until way after 9/11 (he was 18 years old at the time, and would go on to enlist in the military to fight in Iraq) and his later involvement in the agency was only as a sub-contractor. For another, while it's likely his journey started with different intentions, it's pretty clear that at some point (after requesting asylum in Moscow? before?) he became a Russian intelligence asset. I'm not at all hostile to digging up the dishonest motives and lies at the basis of neo-con foreign policy (including its continuing strands under the Obama administration) but it is clear that the among pure whistleblowing and objective investigative reporting were mixed in characters with variously right-libertarian agendas, pragmatic relationships with hostile nation states, etc.

Have you watched Looming Towers? Based on fact and subsequent enquiries, it’s based around the lack of cooperation between the agencies and is cited as a major reason of the failure to prevent it.

Jeff Daniels plays the lead and it’s really worth a watch.

You are statistically more likely to score a goal from playing out from the back than playing it long. It’s not a conspiracy from the FA to discourage heading, it’s the FA finally reacting to successful modes of football from the continent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Versus how many goals have been conceded from mistakes playing out from the back? Bet the latter is far higher. Just seems odd that ALL teams attempt it, even when they're aint very good at it. The data will suggest that headers from goal kicks will have been absolutely slashed as a result of playing out.

Yeah like you're more likely to win a race in an F1 car than a Ford fiesta, but if you're not very good at driving you are more likely to crash the F1 car than you are the fiesta. I'd still say the F1 car would be the better option for a race though. No data to back it up but reckon the F1 car is faster

The whole covid saga made it very, very clear that if climate change hits like many think it will, a big chunk of the population will literally ignore the problem and fight against the evidence their eyes show them.

It will be both very sad and somewhat funny if the human population's big demise is down to a bunch of inbreds refusing to slightly adjust their lives.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems to me that the counter-narratives are being written in advance.

Food shortages due to climate-induced crop failure? Nope, that's green policies imposing communism on us, and Bill Gates/Klaus Schwab buying all the farmland to force us all into eating insects!

Literal killer heatwaves forcing millions to migrate or die? Nope, there was a really hot spell back in 1135 - are you telling me medieval monks were driving round in SUVs?

Blue Ocean Event in the Arctic? Nope, here's a graph showing there's more ice than ever!

Forest fires raging through Australia, California and southern Europe? That's just arsonists pushing the green agenda!

The only thing that could silence these ready-made arguments is clear and unignorable flooding of coastal cities. Pretty hard to find another reason for that.

RR, I don’t consider Snowden the most reliable. But from what I’ve read over the years it seems like the most plausible explanation. My knowledge around the issue isn’t the most forensic, I’ll admit.

Term, I’ve not seen it but will try and check it out.

Is it a conspiracy theory that a group of global elites are controlling things? The mainstream media feeds people misinformation all the time to control them. They make us into suckers and be docile. People are idiots if they read or follow the news, especially if it is from Yahoo or MSN.

Dont get me started on surveillance technology, and how the UK government treats its citizens with suspicion, as if they are guilty. Anybody who trusts the government, either or Labour or Tory are idiots.

It’s a net positive in favour of playing out from the back, I’m led to believe. Because you are also less likely to concede by gifting possession back to the opposition with the long ball.

There’s a reason statistical analysis and the best tactical minds in football favour playing it out from the back rather than playing long for headers. It’s not because the FA are pushing an agenda to end heading in football.

What grinds my gears: Climate activists.

Climate change is a load of rubbish. Its been bloody freezing this winter, and why exactly should I care if two centuries from now the globe will be slightly warmer? Isnt going to be my problem anyway.

Animals evolve, its called natural selection. Science tells us that the weak make way for the strong, so when all the weak animals are dead due to the climate, the world will be made up of stronger animals.

To all those who do cry about the environment: enjoy your soy you soyboys!

An important thing is also when people use actual facts to back up their nonsense. Yes, ice coverage is growing. In the Antarctic. Winds have become stronger, causing sea ice to be blown further from land and cover a larger area but form thinner.

It's a very common tactic in conspiracy theories. Although I do enjoy the incongruence of believing NASA to be terrible NWO communist climate change shills... right up until they produce data that shows Antarctica is growing which is then provided as proof that it's all a hoax and they're admitting it.
