The simple problem for the CPS is that the defence just needs to create reasonable doubt to sink the case. If the girlfriend is refusing to cooperate that is the reasonable doubt. I don’t know what the % success rate for conviction without victim support is but I’ll bet it’s extraordinarily low. Thus the CPS decision.
The simple problem for MG is that everyone has heard the tape. Is not impossible that there’s an exonerating explanation but until that’s presented sure Occam’s razor applies.
Having read a number of these articles (but not really contributed much) the basic fan opinion appears split between he’s not a convicted felon so everything’s fine and should go back to how it was. The alternative is that irrespective of the legal system, the tapes show him to be a despicable coont. Personally I have a lot more sympathy for the latter viewpoint.
