Think I am the only fan in the country who rates Pickford. He's easily England's number 1 and yet most people would prefer Pope?

I'd be delighted if we signed him to be honest.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the standard of goalkeeping has dropped off in recent years?

There are some really good ones like Martinez and Ramsdale and I guess Allison and Eddison, but also a lot of distinctively average or poor ones.

We've got Danny Ward who really doesn't inspire much confidence in those in front of him.

Are there any really good up and coming keepers? Seems like there are several teams in the Premier League that would seriously be better with a new keeper, Spurs and Leicester included.

Don't know about the standard dropping. I mean in terms of English keepers this is the best it's been at for ages with Pope, Ramsdale and Pickford better than any English keeper we've seen since Seaman, apart from maybe Hart during his good years.

I think the standard of CB has gone down though and possibly this is a reflection of how good keepers look these days?

I think it's just that keepers are expected to do more nowadays. They're better with ball at feet on average, but maybe less noticeably good at shot stopping on a stage. Not better or worse overall, just different

also balls are always changing , the get quicker year by year, move more so it may appear that they are getting poorer at shot stop stopping when it could be the shots are getting better ?

It would be a risk and I may be biased but if I were a Spurs fan I'd be wanting to take a punt on Kelleher. I've never seen such a calm and composed keeper at his age and he seems to have it all. Shot stopping, penalties, good in the air and even better with his feet. Think he might count as homegrown too because of the years he spent in our academy. I'd be gutted to see him go but he's got one of the best keepers in the world in front of him so I think he'll be off in the summer.

Not a fan of Martinez - just something about nutjob keepers that I don't like. I always feel they lack concentration and have a clanger in them.

Agreed, been very impressed with Kelleher when I've seen him

True about keepers being required to do more. This should potentially give them the opportunity to be better than keepers in the past but I wouldn't say there are many goalkeeping legends around to go with the likes of Buffon, Cassilas, Schmeichel, Khan, Van der Sar, Cech etc. Neuer would be up there but not many others in this generation I suppose, for now anyway.

I think Allison and maybe Ederson will be viewed in that category eventually.

Have there ever really been more than 2 really top class keepers in the league at any one time? I feel like Lloris has been considered a top-5 keeper in the league for most of his career, which suggests to me there can't have been more than a handful of really good ones at any one time for the past decade

Allison and Ederson should although it'll be a while yet before either retires. A few may have to do more at club level or international level to raise their reputation. Like Martinez could be up there but he isn't going to be by playing for Villa.

It's always seemed like there's been about 2 top class PL keepers for each era, hasn't it? Schmeichel and Seaman, Cech and VDS, Allison and Ederson. I guess it's that combination of longevity at one club and the club being successful (of which the keeper is part of the reason for) that builds that status of being a great.
