As a 4th choice he’d be fantastic, but we’d need a top striker as well as him in the summer

posted on 27/2/23

He’s okay but offers next to nothing as an actual striker. We can do better from both a squad player and starting option.

Weg - a striker who is born not to score. I believe he only has two assists in 11 games now and his other stats should also be very low. I don't know where people are getting this illusion that he is playing well, but the fact is we are winning games in spite of him not because of him. He seems a nice guy but that is about it.

I think it’s a little harsh to dismiss his contributions owing to his lack of goals. The trick in the summer will be to find a prolific striker who can match the off the ball work that Weg provides.

Anyone who has watched City this season should be able to recognise that a striker who only scores goals might not actually improve the team if he doesn’t necessarily compliment the style of play.

Erik likes him, plays him in cup finals.
That's good enough for me. If he wants to keep him, that's also fine with me.

It's not all about the goals scored, but if it weren't for two marginal (and arguably incorrect) offside decisions, he'd be on a more respectable three goals at this point. Yesterday Karius made a good save from his shot which was harder to keep out than Rashford's goal. My point isn't that he's a good enough goal scorer, but that it's a very small sample to judge him on. I'm confident that if ETH is continuing to pick him, he sees Wout as a net positive for the structure of the attack, and I'll be happy with whatever the manager decides in the summer.

In bald we trust.

ETH will know that we need better as a starter, but if he deems him a good fit for a plan B, then it's fine by me.

This. We won't be signing him anyway and rather like with Ighalo, when people have time to reflect and when he's no longer our player they'll come to the conclusion that he simply isn't good enough, because he isn't.

I love his work rate and he seems like a nice man. These things don't make him any more capable as a footballer though

Well, the work rate part certainly does.

He played a part in several goalscoring chances in a cup final, one of which we scored from. That's pretty damn good for someone we are talking about as a 4th choice option.

I’ve defended his performances more than just about anyone else on here I’d think, but I probably wouldn’t be keeping him on.

His positional play, positional pressing, commitment and work rate are very, very good. Not just *that* he presses, but *how* he presses - his cover shadowing, when he goes, how he goes and the lines he takes - are a manager’s dream for a forward. Based not least on how naturally the positional pressing seems to come to him, he’s obviously a very intelligent player, and that’s very useful to have in the side, particularly one with a) bunch of young forwards, b) playing Hagball.

Although he’s disappointed in the air (he just doesn’t win enough duels), he’s held the ball up very usefully when he’s had it in to his feet and body, and makes good decisions about layoffs and in link play.

Despite all that, I’m not sure he’s really cut out for the pace and intensity of the PL, and the fact that he’s struggled at times, particularly facing goal, would be a worry unless he was being kept on to perform a very specific role from the bench.

He just isn’t going to wrack up the figures ETH is going to want from even his least contributive forward, and even if ETH likes the role he’s performed, I think we’ll see a similar kind of player with a little more agility and acceleration and quicker feet brought in to play it.

He’s had games where he’s not been effective at all, and some decent ones.

I thought he was excellent yesterday. Work rate is great, got a lovely assist and had a great strike tipped wide. Should’ve done better with his other chance but he was 7 or 8 out of 10 for me.

Not sure we’ll keep him but with the owners not wanting to spend (I assume) and not many options in Jan, he’s been a decent alternative

Morning Rosso. I don't think you were around last week when I wrote my article about positionist/relationist approaches. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on that topic if you have time.

He's doing a job but I doubt we'll want him on a permanent basis. He's not quite good enough.

When he signed I never thought he would be starting every game even with Martial injured so that has surprised me.

He works hard and his ball retention and hold up lay is decent but overall we need far better in the long term even as back up.

I'm delighted for him though. I bet when he moved to Burnley he didn't think in his wildest dreams that he would ever win a trophy at Manchester United.

Hello mate. I spotted it but didn’t have time to read it all, let alone digest and reply, on Friday, then worked Sat, then was a little distracted yesterday

Will give it a proper read tonight if I can

Sorry but he is trash. Huffing and puffing in a cup final and putting in work is bare minimum. The guy is a Burnley reject and it shows when the ball is at his feet. We already have a couple of cloggers so there is no need of another one.

Get a new first choice striker in summer and we should be good to go

He's been signed to do a job for us and that's what he is doing. But there must be better options out there come the summer, either as the man at the top or playing in a more number 10 type role.

And whilst we expect all players to work hard and put in a shift, there is something satisfying from seeing effectively a limited player trying his best and reaping the benefits - you only have to contrast with when Ronaldo was here and the attitude difference against Weghorst's giving it all for the team

I love Weghorst's commitment and he's terrific defensively, but he's a striker and having decent linkup play probably isn't enough to warrant him staying.

If the manager decides to keep him, I'll live with it tbh.

I'm happy that at the very least, he's won a trophy with us and made a tangible contribution to that success.

He looked so happy last night! Just sat on the pitch after the game in front of the United fans taking it all in with a huge smile on his face.

Hard not to be pleased for him!

Wout would have goals if his in the box runs were picked by our players.

Basically we have rashy on fire but he goes it alone at every opportunity. Less so but Antony pretty much does the same and Bruno can play a pass from deep but get around the 18 yard box and no way he passes

This. A couple of months ago winning a trophy or even playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world was probably no more than a pipe dream for him.

Manchester United say they have been told officially their second goal against Newcastle yesterday has been credited to Marcus Rashford.

Rashford’s shot took a deflection off Sven Botman and looped into the net.

It was credited as an own goal but United now say the decision has been reversed.

“The club has received clarification that Rashford is indeed the goalscorer as his shot was deemed to be on target by the various match officials at Wembley.”

It moves Rashford onto 25 goals for the season.

Weghorst gets an assist.
