Having reverted to the wingback system isn't that where he's been most at home in the past?
He was POTY not long ago and is still a long way off from his "peak" years. That said, I'm always of the opinion that if a player wants to go then let them.
I agree in that I just don’t see where he fits in the system. He’s not dynamic or possibly disciplined enough to play in a two man midfield, and where he has played more advanced, we have gifted players more natural in the positions.
I’d release him personally

He's obviously not garbage... Needs to spend a season or two specialising a certain position and will most likely excel wherever that may be

Completely agree, let him leave.
The worst case scenario that could happen is the club sell Mount to fund Felix permanently. Felix is the antithesis of what we need (especially with Nkunku incoming), it would set a bad precedent.
That would be a ghastly piece of business.
Besides not set in stone that Potter sticks with the back three system and if he does it will be a very fluid system that makes it interchangeable with a back four in game.
(I would say that it is likely that Potter reverts to predominantly deploying a back four system once certain players are shifted and have all the required adequate numbers higher up the pitch in attack for pre-season preparation).
There's definitely a role for one of our outstanding players over the years in Mount in fluid systems.
One subpar season doesn't outweigh the proficiency amd quality displayed in the past. 24 years of age, he'll be back.
Mount signing with the same agency that Potter is a client of, is perhaps a promising sign that he stays.
