Thommo

Well obviously Paul Warne doesn't share that opinion and neither do I. Will Thompson ever make it as a professional footballer? I find it difficult to see what he brings to the club. Not that he is particularly bad, I just think that like Hanson, he doesn't have sufficient of any particular skill or asset to make it as a professional footballer. I hope I am wrong.

I'm with Chicago on this. He's had little game time tbh so not gained as much experience as he'd have liked...but clearly Warne doesnt rate him so he goes out on loan. Like Chicago I thought he could do a job.....

I'm sure Warne has heaped praise on him in the past but pointed out that he was behind others in the pecking order and this makes sense if the likes of Bird, Knight, Hourihane and Smith are all in form but Hourihane is either out of form or just feeling the pressure of all these games now. With Knight unavailable and with injuries to others likely I feel it a mistake to let Thommo go.

I think that Thommo has shown limitations in the past, being far too prone to the sideways or backwards pass (the easier options) but I reckon Warne could get more out of him. He rarely gives the ball away and could develop well with more game time. I guess Warne still regards him as being down the pecking order and in need of some regular game time elsewhere. I would not say Warne does not rate him.

Fin,

In his state of late onset dementia, maybe Owd Spart means 'Will Thompson'?

I agree with Spart on this. Thompson will never make the grade above League 2. I too hope I'm wrong cuz he seems like a nice lad.

Don't forget guys...Spart and I know what decent players look like...we're ancient and have seen the glory days.

I'm more ancient I reckon but I'll bow to you's two's superior knowledge!

Like Chicago, I think its a potential error, but it may have been prompted by a conversation instigated by Liam.
On the other hand, with PW's style of football, you dont need that many midfielders in the squad.
Several u21 players have been loaned out recently. Whether that resulted in yesterdays 1-6 defeat to Stoke is a matter for debate 🤔

Apparently it was 0-0 at half-time, (James Chester having played in the first 45).

I'm both Ang!

Good to know Chester was not involved in that second half rout!

Yep deluge after HT and 3-1 when Bardell was subbed after 60-odd 😯

So Chester was holding us back from scoring then?

It doesn't necessarily follow that sending a player out on loan means that the manager doesn't rate the player. Sometimes a player will develop better if he plays regular football at a lower level than by sitting on a bench or getting five minutes here or there.

We loaned out Mason Bennett and the wise amongst us said it was because he wasn't good enough and would never make the grade. He is playing at a higher level than Derby County and doing pretty well. There are plenty of examples like this, but also plenty of examples where players end up at lower levels. I don't know why we feel the need to rush to judgement on young players on so little evidence. Of course it's always amusing that the ones who are so opinionated are the ones who get it wrong so often and yet have so little insight.

Is there a possibility we can send spart out on loan?

posted on 22/3/23

I wouldn't say Bennett is doing very well at Millwall, he hardly ever starts. Same goes for Malone this season.

Vidal we have seen many young players at Derby in the last 2 seasons and only Cashin has really made it. Us opinionated posters are realists and can spot a good player when they see them. We have seen so many get into the team and not do much and I'm thinking Plange, Eboisi(sp), Ebosele(sp), Cybloski and plenty more whose names I've forgotten.

I was wrong about Will Hughes though, I thought he would be regular England player and sadly he's nowhere near.

We'd probably have to fork out a fee for Spart to be taken on loan to another club/forum.

Its a case of Derby fans looking at a Derby player with rose tinted glasses. List of names that come to mind:

Lee Holmes (youngest player to play for Derby at one point and considered highly)

Miles Addison (until he couldn't move, not helped by Clough's coaching "Dunno, is he a defender or midfielder " )

Giles Barnes ( Don't, don't believe the hype!)

Huddlestone ( Possibly the best career from our Academy players in the last 20+ years)

O'Brien ( Heart condition unfortunately curtailed his promise)

Hanson ( doo woop - question marks over whether he would step up or not. I think Liam Thompsoon may be falling into a similar category as Jamie Hanson)

Lewin Nyatanga ( Remember being absolutely gutted when he left, but he didn't really light it up after he left.

Will Hughes (We all probably expected more from him. Linked, allegedly, to some of the biggest clubs in Europe but ends up at Udinesse reserves rebranded as Watford. Best season for him was in the Championship. Joining Palace next just resulted in his stock dropping further when you'd expect a mid table club ( Wolves, Brentford, Brighton type) coming in for him. I'd take him back in a heartbeat)

Its just taught me not to believe Ang's scouting hype. (jokes)

Great stuff Des, I'd love to see Will back. I really need a player to love...I haven't got one since Martin left! Then again I do like Forsyth.

Desi, in the current phraseology, I can only give my opinions 'as I see them at the time'

VC, have you forgotten that we currently have a full Irish international, who came thro the Academy ?

posted on 22/3/23

...and the club's vice-captain hasnt done too badly in the last 2 seasons 🤔

I also thought Hughes would play for England. I thought Huddlestone was incredibly talented when he first came into the team at 15 years old or whatever it was. I think only a lack of pace stopped him from having an even better career.

Holmes was one I had high hopes for, I got that completely wrong! There would be something wrong with us if we weren't a bit rose-tinted with our young prospects, though few make it to the highest level.

Making a living as a professional sportsman is a pretty good achievement in my book. We like to say this or that player is crap but it's all relative, they're all fairly brilliant really compared to us mortals. I managed to become a scratch golfer last year but I'm a million miles from professional level. i was never better than a 24 handicapper as a footballer though I still play now.

Yes, good stuff Desi! But we have also had/have Sibley.

It does put our Academy into perspective in that it has produced players who are at least having good professional careers and who could well get better. No mean feat as Vidal says.

If you go back far enough you struggle to come up with any decent names we have produced - Buxton, Hall, Richardson, Bowers (no!) But more recently what about Webster, Daniel, Boulton, Carsley, Steve Powell, Langan. All could now easily play at the highest or next highest levels.

I hope more of you will delve around and come up with more names as I've no doubt they exist.

How many of those played for England? We have a really expensive top drawer academy but don't seem any more successful in bringing young players to a level where they can can play football at a high level than we were under Tim Ward. In fact we have fewer success stories than when we took young players in as boot cleaners.

The only two whom I believe received England caps were Tom Huddlestone and Phil Boyer. Boyer was kept out the first team by Kevin Hector understandably and received his cap while with Southampton. Huddlestone started his career with Forest.

It has always annoyed me that Forest seem far better at bringing through young players than us. They had players like Tony Woodcock, Peter Davenport and Duncan Mckenzie (although McKenzie never played for England). Recently Mattie Cash has become a Premier League regular as has Brennan Johnson.

So what are they doing right that we aren't?
