You're basing that off his stint over a decade ago at Roma, when he was new to top level football management. He improved, evolved, adapted after that.
Since then has had to deal with huge established personalities (prima-donnas, some would say)...in Messi, Suarez and Neymar and won them over. Extracting the most out of them, when the masses doubted whether they could function together...well they did in resounding fashion under him.
That's just the one example...
