Workmate of mine said his wife has a cold bath every morning and apparently loves it, couldn’t think of anything worse personally

My gym has one of those. See people getting in and out no trouble.

I can barely get my feet submerged. Think I'd have a heart attack if I got in properly.

I know someone that does this too, she loves it, only dies 3-5 mins, using her bath plus a load of ice. Says it has mental Heath benefits too

Iv done them before, they are murder, but you do build up a tolerance to them, they do work but mainly for high intensive workout recovery. I dont know how much use they would be for people that train 1/2 times a week.

Its to help reduce inflamation in the muscles and to get the body to release more endorphins in order to mask the pain your feeling.

its only with regular prolonged use that you will really see the benefits.

She’s obviously one of the lucky ones, if I did it I’d probably die for good

Very good at alleviating inflammation and structural recovery, but there is evidence to suggest that they inhibit hypertrophy if undertaken post-workout.

Depends what you're going for - maybe also look into heat protein therapy via the use of saunas

Have cold showers every day and do cold water swimming every other week.

It's absolute brilliant. I know folk with anxiety that find tremendous benefit from it.

Yeah, that’s one of the reasons the person I know did it.

Tentative mentioning this in lieu of the Titanic nutter but at one of the Orlando museums they have a tank of salt water at the temp of the ocean when it sank and encourage you to see how long you can hold your hand in. OK, I could have started swearing and shouting to stay in longer but I managed less than 20 seconds

That said my lad ice baths several times a week after training.

If you ever wanted a cottage business that isn't gonna be replaced by AI..

Mediation and cold water therapy sessions is the way to go. Huge growth in that area from what I see.

Hi ChatGPT how do I go about getting cold water therapy?

"Find some cold water, go in the cold water".

Hmmmm

ChatGPT isn’t ai, it’s clever programming pretending to be ai.

I do 2, sometimes 3 high intensity exercises per week, 2 kickboxing with 120 situps and no rest between rounds, plus 2 or 3 heavy weight gym sessions. Good old fashioned hot baths are fine for me. Some prefer ice method, some prefer heat.

Would be interested to know whether people think they make a real difference to recovery as I do some pretty long runs.

if your training is intense and often then yes it will help and will be noticeable the next day also since you used to training without it.

Its why people end up looking forward to them

Wild swimming is taking off. Women mainly. Probably cos they are more sociable and it offers a chance to spunk more money on wetsuits, dryrobes, accoutrements...?

Can see how people get into it. If it helps some then why not though plenty naysayers bringing up pollution impacts and destroying countryside. Maybe why councils are trying to replicate the conditions by blaming fuel prices and turning their pools to Baltic?

I think the point rooney was trying to make is that if you believe it inhibits hypertrophy and you are body building to look good then don't do it.

If you are doing it to look after your muscle condition for high performance competition then it maybe has merit? As a lot of high performance competition is in the head then I am on the side of 'if it makes you feel better whether physically or mentally, real or imagined, then go for it'.

I've a group of friends who do it in the sea every morning. Absolute nutcases but they say it's excellent for their mental health. They still seem mental to me.
