Our treble side vs City’s (potential) one..

Impossible to compare. Look at that brilliant United side Ferguson managed who were completely taken apart by Peps Barca in the Champions League final. I’m not saying City are as good as that Barca side, but football has changed immeasurably. Players now will be fitter for starters.

I haven’t read any replies but this is the only important answer to me.

Our treble team were much more exciting to watch than this City side.

I don’t think they’d be more exciting to watch against this City side though. Wouldn’t get a kick playing that 442

It's close. So it's a valid 'question'.

But MUFC, under SAF, were always even more of a gestalt unit, than the current MCFC. Indeed, only Jose's CFC squad came close to the SAF model.

That 1999 midfield unit, for example, was exemplary. Forming both a dynamic, hard-working and creative spine and width. If one was "off their game" it mattered little, the others would get you.

Completely opposite from the current set-up by the way.

The front line (or the pointy bit) was also better, as that too was reliant on gestalt. It was better than the current MUFC or MCFC front-line because it wasn't just Cole and Yorke (who was more of an attacking midfielder any way) but also had the benefit of drawing on OGS and/or Sheringham.

That choice may not include any as good as Harland, but the qualities of the midfield unit allowed 4-4-2. But sadly MUFC don't, currently, even remotely have those kind of options.

This current MCFC squad is definitely as deep and as effective as United's treble winners were, but one things for certain the 1999 squad would NOT have capitulated so easily, and so often, as the current squad does, and would undoubtedly have matched MCFC's current squad in endeavour creativity and effectiveness.

We'd batter them

City as the 4-4-2 would have no chance.

I think you need to drop Yorke out and put Butt in.

Still City however.

I think this would be the worst champions league trophy win for a while with the lack of quality and competitiveness in Europe this season.

So if City did win the treble I don’t think it would be as good as 99 purely because of who United had to beat in FA cup and against that great arsenal side of the late 90’s.

Also the amount of the money they have spent is a fundamental reason they would have done it aswell.

Depends, do they all get the same PEDs?

People really think City could handle a prime Scholes in midfield

Over a season City would be well clear of United imo.

United got 79 points and drew most of their CL games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nonsense argument as the 99 team could get more PTS now than they did back then. Also Fergie would have pushed them harder had he needed to as well.

CL money has only grown since 1999 too, that's why we now have City Arsenal and Liverpool getting huge PTS hauls. The gap to the bottom clubs is bigger not smaller.

United 99 treble side played Barca twice, Bayern thrice, Inter Milan twice, Juventus twice, without loosing a game to win the CL. That United side is criminally underrated

It would be a close game but City would take it. Pep destroyed one of Man Utd’s best teams ever twice with Barca

If you think our team from 10/11 was one of our best even then there’s no point arguing.

Should have gone through in that one though. Still annoys me thinking about it. Simultaneously one of the best and worst games I’ve ever been to!

Disagree with this. The quality of the league overall has improved due to the money coming into the league. Most of the current weaker teams would demolish the weaker teams from that period. The same for the stronger teams, in my opinion.

At that time the big money was being spent in Italy and Spain. 5 out of the 10 previous finalists had been from those two countries and none from England, in fact before United's win, England had had no finalists for 15 years. In contrast there were 6 English finalists out of the last 10. Simply the PL was a weaker league then as it had worse players and Spain and Italy were ahead.

Id put Pallister in for Johnson. Then we would win 9 out of 10

That team easily converts into a 4-3-3. Just drop Beckham into the midfield three.

conditioning levels be so unfair city would smoke them without breaking a sweat. Neville himself said football now days is on a completely different level to when he played and is of a much higher standard in every single department.

I tend to agree so City win 10/10.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think teams have regressed creatively and technically but really advanced tactically

Creatively I’d agree. Technically, definitely not though.

Keane would be sent off before he got out of the tunnel nowadays.
