Benzema

He's had injury trouble this season and required more rest, but still managed very decent returns - 18 from 23 league starts, 30 in 42 in total.

You never know with someone his age; the risk might be similar to the one you took with Ibra, albeit Benzema has by no means slowed down as much as Ibra had when he joined you, and an off-season with no international commitments might help him to regain full fitness.

As for the two major scandals he was involved in, I don't think either were as black-and-white as they were made out to be, but I can't be aersed to get into an argument over either.

That was a good Lyon side.

We're not going to be able to afford to fill all of our key squad gaps with high quality players in mid-20s age bracket. So it seems our choices are:

- We don't fill all the gaps
- We fill some of the gaps with players who aren't massive upgrades
- We find short-term solutions

If the ideal striker isn't available or affordable this summer but might be in 12 months' time (because Kane will be free; because we'll have enough budget for Osimhen), I'd say there's a good argument for bringing in a high class veteran for a year rather than a medium quality striker whose medium level ceiling is on our books for 4-5 years.

Whether Benzema has dropped off the Ronaldo Cliff at this point, I don't know.

Kane is not leaving the PL. He wants the PL goalscoring record. Also he does not have the ambition to test himself in a league with tougher defences. Also his style (scoring penalties) might not translate well to playing for Real Madrid and their style (scoring goals that aren't penalties). Also he has one of the worst assists records in world football this season, got to do better than that for Real Madrid.

Not that it makes things we don't see right of course. I do think we make judgements based on what we see a lot of the time though.

We haven't SEEN anything proven to be greenwoods doing
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't mention Greenwood in that post. It was just a generalisation.

Zero chance Kane will ever be able to speak Spanish.

Hasn't stopped him so far. Although in his current role all he needs to know is one word, "penalty".

Nobody wants Greenwood at the club but Benzema who went to town on an underage prossie is ok?

Oh and on purely footballing terms this would be a bad idea anyway
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did he?

I knew about the blackmail thing with Valbuena.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Him and Ribery were tag teaming a 16 year old hooker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? I thought that wasn't proven, just allegations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont think they denied it. Just argued she was legal at the time, I think.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Was she legal?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
She was 17 years old at the time, and has herself always said she lied to Ribery and told him she was 18.

Age of consent in France was 15, but it is illegal to pay anyone under the age of 18 for sexx.

Afaik, Benzema has always denied any involvement.

Good, Man Utd have officially become a retirement club now. Ronaldo, Benzema and possibly Eden Dzeko.

They have no intention of winning the league or bringing young players up. Just a Hollywood club

What is United’s obsession with becoming a retirement home for strikers?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No idea. Ronaldo, Ibra and Cavani were all bad ideas from the offset.

posted on 30/5/23

Didn't think Cavani was the worst idea with Greenwood's development in mind at the time, and Martial having come off the back of a good season. I was OK with Cavani for a couple of seasons to let Greenwood grow into the role. Likewise Zlatan - big things were expected of Rashford and Martial at the time, but they weren't ready to be carrying the goalscoring burden for the team.

Ronaldo was facking disastrous and stupid in every way. Not an ounce of logic behind that one. And right now we also need to be getting someone in or approaching their peak years.

We need to sign a younger forward. Preferably one that is already very good. But that will be difficult with the striker market being as thin as it is right now.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

For me the key question is, if a very high class long-term striker isn't attainable this summer, whether we commit to a striker who's an upgrade on Martial/Weggy but not elite and a significant salary commitment over 4-5 years. I think we have to be careful about making a decision that limits our scope in the future. So if we think we're better placed to get the long-term star striker next season, I'd be quite comfortable with going for a cheaper option who we see as a long-term understudy (Thuram) as well as a short-term upgrade or an experienced stop-gap. Or both.

posted on 30/5/23

We need a top CF. If we cant get our No 1 target, get your No 2, or 3. Its too important a role to wait 6 / 12 months.
