What is United’s obsession with becoming a retirement home for strikers?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No idea. Ronaldo, Ibra and Cavani were all bad ideas from the offset.

It is simple economics. Let other teams produce these players, pay their high wages throughout their careers and when they reach legendary status and are in their late thirties, that's when we pounce and BOOM shirt sales. I'd rather buy a Lewandowski shirt in a couple of years than some youngster coming through. Could take a decade before I'd buy that shirt. Simple economics.

He hasn’t looked nearly the same player when I’ve seen him this season tbh

This. His stats are still great but from the eye test you can see he’s understandably on the slide. If we sign him it will show we’ve learned nothing as a club.

Sling him on the same rubbish heap as Casemiro.

I’ve been probably been one of the few United fans on here that has argued that Casemiro isn’t always the dogs b*llocks but he’s certainly not on a rubbish heap.

The problem is we keep saying maybe a short term fix will help before we can bring in the long term solution. But we rarely if ever bother getting in these long term solutions.

Tbf we did have them but they didn’t work out. Martial, Rashford and Greenwood were considered the long term solutions but we know what happened there.

Kane will end up at Chelsea. Benzene I’d rather a younger long term option but on a free would certainly take

posted on 30/5/23

I didn’t mean just up front, every summer it seems like we get offered an older player who is a short term solution because our long term ones aren’t available for whatever reason. Do we often get a mid 20 something player who’s proven to some degree and ready for the next step to a big club?

posted on 30/5/23

I just read Diogo Costa has played his last game for Porto. Guess we’ll just stick with de Gea as a short term gap.

It seems to be more common with the striker position, though. But I get what you mean, I’ve said for a long time that the age profile of our squad hasn’t been right, not enough players in their mid 20s and too many either side of that.

We need to sign a younger forward. Preferably one that is already very good. But that will be difficult with the striker market being as thin as it is right now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

For me the key question is, if a very high class long-term striker isn't attainable this summer, whether we commit to a striker who's an upgrade on Martial/Weggy but not elite and a significant salary commitment over 4-5 years. I think we have to be careful about making a decision that limits our scope in the future. So if we think we're better placed to get the long-term star striker next season, I'd be quite comfortable with going for a cheaper option who we see as a long-term understudy (Thuram) as well as a short-term upgrade or an experienced stop-gap. Or both.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem is that we’ve done this for a number of years and it hasn’t worked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Core problem is lack of strategic thinking. If that's not fixed, whatever tactical approach we take this summer is liable to fall short.

posted on 30/5/23

Not really, there was strategic thinking in those decisions. The issue is that I don’t think it’s a good strategy for United to be relying on strikers that are either too young or too old to be relied on to put in consistent performances up front.

posted on 30/5/23

So in a scenario where we can't recruit a really good striker of the ideal age profile, do you prefer to buy a reasonably good one of the right age profile over all other options?

posted on 30/5/23

Yeah I probably would. Depends on the strikers available.

posted on 30/5/23

That’s the thing about being ‘Utd’ you can address your problem areas - but where there isn’t an obvious candidate you can sign and expensive stop-gap and it doesn’t really matter as long as you identify well (like Ibra in the past or Casemiro now) and address other areas of the squad which you are able to

Unless you mean on a free next summer then there’s no chance.

Levy has enough heat right now without selling Kane to Chelsea as well

So we got rid of Ronaldo to replace him with Benzema?

What sort of logic is this.
