It's an amazing story and huge credit should go to the eldest child to keep them all together and out of harms way.

Strange advice from the mother, you'd think staying near the crash site would be the best bet for being saved and for getting food (peanuts, sandwiches, bits of human etc)

Berlusconi wasn’t without his issues but he did once refer to Angela Merkel as an unfeckable lardarse, so not all bad

Fair play to the kids, they survived about 38 days more than I would if I had to fend for myself.

And I live in a house. In a town. With shops etc nearby.

A child keeping an 11 month old baby alive in the jungle for 40 days is incredible

I read about this, pretty mental. Probably would have been found sooner staying at the crash site but also probably not ideal having to stay next to your dead mother.

There are some great Berlusconi/Putin photos, evil bros.

You need to watch the new urban Bear Grylls episode when he shows you how to order a deliveroo but then the devlieroo guy eats it himself so he has to get an Uber Eats. I thought he wasn't going to make it at one point.

It seems they took what food was available with them. It wasn't a large plane, so I don't suppose it would have had all that much to begin with.

As for reasons for leaving the site, my first guess is that the corpses would end up attracting jaguars or other large predators looking for an easy meal, and it's probably easier to stay away from those beasts rather than run away from them.

It could also be that she wanted to save them the mental ordeal of having to see her die and hang around next to her dead body.

Apparently, the family are members of an indigenous tribe and the kids had learned some of the basics of living and foraging in the jungle from their elders.

This is the most unbelievable part. Obviously the baby went without milk and the 13 year old was intelligent enough about their surroundings to keep the baby alive. The forest had just entered harvest which was lucky. The rescuers apparently had been dropping crates of food around the jungle. Although the mother's advice prolonged the search by three days, it probably helped them find food and water and saved them from watching her die.

I read quotes from the gran saying that the kids knew how to find food in the jungle to survive. If there wasn't enough nearby after 4 days, then it makes sense that they set off into the woods. Absolutely amazing effort from the eldest child to keep them all alive. He/she deserves a medal.

That is the kind of stuff they should teach in schools. Like what is ok to eat and what is bad. How to not freeze to death overnight. Kids wander off at young ages that's when they need to know it, and they remember the rest of their lives. I usually only get lost in the woods as an adult after 9 beers but even then I would still value knowing what to do more than a specific algebra formula I never need to use.

Incredible story, the love and strength the eldest child must’ve shown to keep them safe and together is difficult to imagine.

Netflix documentary incoming.

Yea, i read the story a bit more and seems they were pretty capable of surviving in the jungle. Still an amazing feat though and also shows how disconnected from nature we are in the western world.

How long do you give it before movie production companies start sniffing around the kids for their stories?
