PSG are the ones that lit the touch paper with the Neymar/Mbappe deals.
We also have to take some blame here given our transfer record
It all started with Andy Carroll, Liverpool ruined the market.

You do realise united paid 30m for Veron over ten years before the Carroll deal 😂😂😂
The Athletic said that'd be over 150m in today's market.... for Veron....let that sink in.
Mike needs to go back to bed I think 😂
Every single PL club is guaranteed at least £120m a season in TV revenue before a single ball is kicked. Before a single ticket is sold. Before a single halftime beer or pie is sold.
This is what is inflating the market.

This.. and that's what attracted the high spenders/investors to the sport. It became a business with very, very high roi

They learnt from their mistake though & never spent 100mil on Serie A's best midfielder ever again
Tbf Veron's actually a decent argument to claim Chelsea broke the market. Flopped so hard at United but along came Abramovich to take him off their hands, like 15mil (back when that was substantial) in the new world was nothing

He obviously didn’t make the impact SAF had wanted, but he didn’t flop that hard at United.
He played 80 games across his two seasons, despite struggling with fitness and then succumbing to injury in the second half of his second season; he made important contributions to a PL title; and he was key to two European campaigns leading to CL semis and quarters.
He was never really suited to English football - he didn’t have the conditioning for it. But he played some great football for us at times.
Yes, we overpaid for him. But that’s what we do.

He defo flopped. The exact comparison to that is keita with us. Everything you have just said about why he wasnt a flop could be said about keita too. But he was a massive flop for us. Put bias aside.
When veron signed for yous I genuinely thought that was it for the rest of the league. He was 1 of the best midfielders in the world at the time. He never showed anywhere near them levels with utd. For the money paid and what you expected, a massive flop.

Well apart from the fact that Keita has averaged just over 20 games a season for Liverpool since he signed and Veron averaged over 40, being an integral part of the side.

Keita played vital roles in games in the seasons we won the league and champs league. In the season we won the fa cup and league cup keita played 40.
When keita was fit he stated most games, so klopp clearly thought he was integral. But I can take off my red tinted specs, hold my hands up and admit for 54m what we got in the end was a massive letdown.
If you are happy with what you got from veron, a 32m signing in what 2001, who was 1 of the hest around at that time, then fair enough. To most others he will quite rightly be labelled a flop.
veron was actually pretty good at chelsea.
i think it just shows the expectation that these players had back then. Nowadays any player is £30mill plus. It's silly.
