Bournemouth sack O’Neil!

There were some rumours last night of a PL manager being questioned under caution regarding an alleged historic r*pe.

Hopefully, that's nothing to do with this and it's Bournemouth just showing some (misplaced perhaps?) ambition in wanting a 'bigger' name.

They really do deserve to go down for this.

Unless of course he's Greenwooded somebody.

If it simply him being sacked for football reasons I am stunned, wtf else, with their squad and start did they expect from him?

Its gone fully Tonto with managers being replaced

The former is the only one that makes any kind of sense. Ridiculous decision otherwise.

It’s seems a mad decision, but then again I remember when Southampton sacked Nigel Adkins who did a decent job and replaced him with Pochettino

Bournemouth have announced Spaniard Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, replacing Gary O'Neil who was sacked earlier on Monday.

Yeah, Brighton got stick for sacking Chris Hughton too but it turned out to be the best decision they ever made.

Its possible something dodgy has gone on but sometimes there is genuine foresight behind these decisions. Clubs down the bottom end have got to decide whether they want to spend a few seasons fighting relegation before the inevitable happens, or whether they want to take the kinds of gambles Brighton did to try and heighten their ceilling a bit.

Former Bournemouth player and manager John Williams told BBC Radio Solent he was "totally shocked" by the decision.

"I thought the Cherries were moving along nicely and building for the pre-season coming up," Williams said.

"The first thing that springs to mind is, they must have someone lined up.

"Without a doubt Gary O'Neil will feel hard done by. I doubt he will be out of work for long."

Looks like that guy has done a great job at Rayo Vallecano.

Promotion then two mid table finishes. Above Sevilla last season.

I've heard it said that Bournemouth's performance levels weren't amazing, but they had a knack of either losing or winning games in the run in rather than drawing them, which proved decisive. I didn't watch them a huge amount but never got the impression O'Neil had them playing amazing football. Is it possible he provided a short-term bounce but isn't someone to lay down the foundations for effective football over a season?

I think he did well considering the squad Bournemouth have. But I think Bournemouth’s new owners have a bit more ambition, and Iraola is meant to be a promising young coach. Will be interesting to see how it works out this season.

The teams that got relegated had better squads than Bournemouth - including bottom side, Southampton. There were no "amazing" performances to get from that side. Keeping them up was a fantastic achievement.

Maybe so. He did a great job. But it could still be the case that he's not the best candidate to do the next job, if the club want to build a certain style of football.
