Stopping the war means giving Ukraine to Russia
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not necessarily, Putin indicated yesterday Ukraine neutrality would be his only major demand. He also indicated that Zelensky has been advised by France, the UK and US not to negotiate until Russian forces retreat.
Basically, it's filling the right peoples pockets, weakening Russia, so let's squeeze them a little more.
NATO have shown Russia these invasions to the west will not be tolerated, I doubt Putin will make the same mistake any time again soon. All we need to do is give assurances Ukraine will not join the EU or NATO and a deal could be made.
The alternative is we lose thousands more lives, the cost of living continues to rise and eventually a stalemate is met. That's best case, worst case we don't even want to consider.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
i believe 80% + of the population of Crimea "feel" Russian, and were happy to be annexed by Russia
Donbass is similar
Also bear in mind ethnic Russians were persecuted by the rather strong neo-nazzzii element in the Ukrainian military and Government for a good 10 years

I’m keen on the person who wants to stop the Ukraine war, in any which way, being in charge.
The world was already going to be tough post Covid, this war is totally destroying the average citizens quality of life all over Europe, and even further afield.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you able to quantify how much of the cost of living crisis is down to the Ukraine war, as opposed to other factors?
- No, are you? I do know they're a huge supplier of commodities and fertilizer, Ukraine wheat.
It's objective fact that there was already such a crisis before Putin invaded Ukraine.
- Very true, I think this has been a great excuse for the UK, US and other government to point the finger at Putin instead of taking accountability.
We also know that it hit harder in the UK than most other European countries (due to economic policies that you broadly support).
- You'll be glad to know, I voted to stay in the EU, if that's what you're referring to.
Since the start of the war, wholesale energy prices have actually settled again.
- I always find it amusing when commodity wholesale prices rise, so do consumer prices, but when wholesale prices fall it tends to stay the same or remain higher than previous (food, energy).
Meanwhile, it is widely documented that in territories that Russia has occupied, children have been deported to be placed with Russian families, women have been gang raped, murder of civilians of all ages has been rife.
- 1 good reason to end this war ASAP
This week came the news that hundreds of Ukrainian prisoners of war returned after prison exchanges came home having been castrated by their Russian captives. They were told that it was done to prevent them from fathering Ukrainian children. Can you set out what degree of genocide you feel is an acceptable price in exchange for slight mitigation of the cost of living crisis that you oppose doing anything about through economic policies such as higher taxes and greater state intervention?
- No, but it's another great reason to end this war. Let's not forget, it is a war, and humans are humans. Humans are capable of horrendous crimes when desperate.
And do you think that giving Putin's Russia the territorial concessions it demands in order to negotiate a settlement are a recipe for military and economic stability in Europe? Because the West has essentially turned a blind eye to since the annexation of Crimea and 2014 invasion of Donbass in order to avoid rocking the boat. NATO membership was always off the table because we didn't want to rock the boat. I'd argue the costs of acquiescing to Putin are far higher than supporting Ukraine. Certainly in terms of moral costs, which I know are secondary from your point of view, but also the economic ones.
- I think Putin has felt the wrath of NATO as much as he needs to so that he will not be doing this again anytime soon. However, to save his own skin, he does need to come out of this with some sort of victory, such as Ukraine remaining neutral.
I don't like Putin, I don't like what he's done. But let's face it, Ukraine are pushing Russia out of their territory, and if by some miracle they do, will Putin accept this lying down? I think as soon as he gets the gist they're going to lose the war he starts using tactical nukes.

retreat from where though?
The majority ethnic Russian Crimea and the large part of Donbass they already control are not going to be given up, that's for sure
Also, I would advise to extrapolate what is actually happening in Eastern Ukraine from various sources not just the BBC and other Western media
My interpretation has been that the Ukrainian army is now in a v bad place. All that NATO weaponry means little if you don't have the manpower and expertise to use it properly

yes i agree it's funny
because the concept of Russians and Ukrainians being of a different ethnicity is highly contentious and has only been considered in the last century
Let me rephrase that , and say Russian speakers in Ukraine who look to Moscow and feel part of the Rusosphere
Really the difference between "Russian" and "Ukrainian" is one of language, and even then that is a messy blurred distinction, as in a large swathe of Central Ukraine a kind of blended Russian/Ukrainian is spoken as the first language by most of the population (and that includes Kiev)
Robb a question,
what is the general opinion of the man in the street where you are, concerning Ukraine,
is their any real interest at all, do most people there give a damm about whats going on over in far away places,
and what about the Russians and Ukrainians ,are their any tensions that are noticeable ?
Zelensky btw hardly ever spoke Ukrainian until this war started, and by all accounts his Ukrainian isn't the best

Just my opinion, but I feel you're an idiot. I could take anyone, from anywhere, have them DNA mapped and I guarantee they would be an absolute melting pot of ethnicity. You want to focus on arbitrary lines on a map, which are ever changing, and then say things like "100% Greek".
Your views may have held some merit 3000 years ago, which is probably where they belong.
It's pretty embarrassing really.
