"He's commanding, can use his left and right foot equally well and he's so comfortable on the ball, which helps his team progress up the field. That also means that he can drag the opposition's centre-forward out, leading to his side attacking with a man up.
"Moreover, he patrols the 18-yard box, makes his presence felt on set-pieces, has good judgement on aerial balls and has an innate ability to launch quick counters when he catches the ball."
The above table gives a flavour of the qualities Onana brings, shown through a comparison of his playing statistics with those of De Gea from their appearances in all competitions in 2022-23.
"A born leader, Andre Onana will be an important asset for Manchester United between the sticks and in the dressing room," said BBC Africa's Victoire Eyoum.
"His skills with the ball at his feet, his serenity when facing pressure and excellent reading of the game need no further proof, but one of his biggest strengths is probably his confidence in his own abilities and of his team-mates.
"He doesn't seem to be afraid of anyone and he seems to always believe that they can beat any team and are capable of the impossible."
Throughout his time at Manchester United, Ten Hag has spoken about how players at the club need to possess the right personality and mentality within a "culture of high standards and values".
The Dutchman clearly sees Onana as a good fit for this.
"He definitely won't be fazed by the pressure that comes with playing for a giant like Manchester United, the heaviest domestic shirt in English football," said Schiavone.
"You need exceptional talent, a cool head and a strong personality and impressively, the Cameroonian ticks all those boxes with flying colours.
"Let's not forget that Onana bounced back from a 12-month doping suspension when at Ajax by going on to dislodge a Serie A legend like Samir Handanovic in Inter's goal and spearheading the Nerazzurri's European push with a flurry of world-class displays. This is testament to his mental strength, nothing affects him."
And what of those less savoury career moments?
"Goalkeepers have calmed down these days but Onana's eccentricity, arrogance and temper are reminiscent of 90s legends Oliver Kahn, Jose Luis Chilavert and Schmeichel himself," added Schiavone.
"With a history of high-profile fallouts, there are no doubts that he comes with a baggage. But that's a good thing, his character and strong self-confidence will rub off on everybody at United. All things considered, he's a Ten Hag signing and as such he'll not let his mentor down."
Will be interesting to see exactly what level he’s capable of with us. But it’s certainly the right style of keeper we need to become a more dominant team with and without the ball.
One of my fave ever keepers because of that night in Amsterdam when he killed Ajax. Seems to have improved a lot since then though
Now instead of booting the ball to the opposition, we finally have a keeper who can pass it short to Maguire, to then boot the ball to the opposition. Progress.

This guy seems more likely to dribble past Casemiro and pass to Rashford...
Really hope fans and media don't knock his confidence when that first inevitable mistake happens. Hopefully it's after his established himself a bit...

Already looking forward to the United JA606 board wailing, purple-faced, toy-throwing, bed-wetting meltdown.
I have really no idea how good this lad is. But I think it is going to be fun finding out. Even if he does cost us the odd goal here and there, I don't think it will be any more than De Gea. And his positive impact on our football should outweigh them anyway.

Yeah first mistake people will go full Brexit, tippy tappy foreign PC nonsense this is not the United way!
The scouts must have the easiest job ever. Does or did he play for Ajax, yes...sign him up.
We know RDD has already set his stall out with Onana.
Despite only being at Inter Milan for a season, Andre Onana has bonded with the Inter faithful.
The goalkeeper, who is Manchester United bound, won the Italian Cup and Super Cup, but the highlight of his spell will be knocking out bitter rivals AC Milan of the Champions League to reach the final.
Erik ten Hag's decision to bring in Onana will partly be because of his talent on the ball and ability to distribute expertly.
In an interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport, the 27-year-old spoke highly of Inter: "The San Siro and Inter fans made me feel something special and I won't forget that for the rest of my life.
"For some matches we were really as one, I had the feeling of playing not as 11 players, but as 80,000. Being able to experience that was a privilege that football and my life have given me."
After just a season in Serie A, Onana has admitted he "couldn't resist" a move to Old Trafford.
The Cameroon international told Gazzetta Dello Sport: "I really want to begin this new exciting adventure with a coach who as far as I'm concerned is a maestro.
"I'm going to play in a great league and for a great club which has an enormous amount of history just like Inter. It's important to be honest and tell the people the truth. I'm someone who's always looking for new challenges and to play in the Premier League for a club like United is irresistible."

I just hope his shot stopping isn’t as bad as it seems on YouTube. Unorthodox to say the least.
Him and Evans gonna make Uniteds defence the envy of the PL
