Top 5 CL?

posted on 31/7/23

It's not been officially announced yet but it is does look likely to be this coming season yeah, ready for the 2024/25 CL campaign.

La Liga also looking likely to get a 5th spot. Largely down to Madrid n Sevilla doing so well.

When are we getting a 6th spot?

This makes a bit of a mockery of the CL and makes the PL much less exciting.

Similar with Liverpool and city doing so well.

It depends who finishes 5th I think. For example if it is us then we go through but someone like Newcastle will not have the necessary quota of points so won't qualify.

This might have changed since I last read up on it.

The top two best performing for the season get the extra spot.

*best performing leagues

Yeah it’s based on league not club. If Luton finish 5th they will go into the CL

This was the original plan but rejected by the smaller clubs and you can see why.

It will be whoever finishes 5th. Although they might have to pre qualify in the early knockout rounds.

Yeah.

You almost have to admire the cheek of UEFA though, admonishin the super league whilst basically trying to sneak their own version through the back door.

Believe it is over 4 year cycle, and England well clear.

How many teams from the PL do people think should be in the CL? Seems like people would be fine with as many as possible. 20 even? Where do you start drawing the line to try and keep a balance of quality around Europe? Remember that this system may not always benefit England like it currently is.

Absolute farce

Well it depends entirely on the number of team UEFA want in the competition. I think the new format looks awful, but I also quite liked the second group stage and away goals rules and in hindsight we're much better off without them. So I guess we'll see.

The numbers are not really the point here. Fairly clear this is just the next stage in the forming of a euro league.

It is 2035 and Saudi owned Fulham have just secured the new 10th CL spot in the PL. Investors saw the potential in Fulham after fellow Saudi owned side West Brom secured last season's 9th CL spot after heavy investment in the team. Qatar are now looking at the prospect of buying Norwich in anticipation of an 11th CL spot coming to the PL.

It will be 6 sides within 5 years and more or less 8 sides in a decade I reckon.

It’s all about money, Aston Villa vs Real Sociedad will generate more revenue than BATE Borisov vs Videoton - UEFA has seen the figures generated by the Prem and wants more of that - the rest of Europe comply because they desperately need it also.

The game is purely about money these days.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if within 5 years we see UEFA expand the competition again and start inviting all star teams - MLS, Saudi, J League, South America

I don't think so. For one, you'll need a 50+ team CL format to make it happen - as far as I know the addition of an extra team for the top 2 leagues hasn't come at any other league's expense? (Do correct me if I'm wrong). And secondly, I don't think its in UEFA's interest to pretty much completely devalue the Europa League.

No, in fact there is more space for other leagues as well.

They are already expanding from 32 to 36, 50 is nothing to them.

The Europa League will be more competitive - Sevilla likely to qualify for the CL. They already created the conference for the diddy teams, the CL is the cash cow

posted on 31/7/23

Yeah, but i cant imagine a diluted 50+ CL filled with mid-table teams from England, Spain, Germany and Italy is that appealing to anyone.

There's also a point where logistically it starts to become ridiculous. They are approaching that point already tbh but there's only so far you can push it.

They should just have 2 separate competitions.
First a group stage for all teams who qualify for Europe - 120 odd.
Then a knockout stage with group winners being in CL, 2nd being in Europa and 3rd in ECL.
That way the groups can have all the shiiity little teams in, and the CL knockouts be just the best of England, Spain, Germany and PSG.

The new league structure in the European competitions looks schit.

I hate that you don't play teams home and away in the league section and that you could draw a nation from your own country in the league section.

That said it will get it's chance and it might be a novelty for a while.
