It’s quite extraordinary how the so-called evangelical right still continue to worship at the altar of Trump. Never mind the many indictments, which have mountains of supporting evidence for anyone with more than 3 brain cells. Just generally as a human being, is there a LESS Christian bloke on planet Earth than old DJT? Can’t be many, yet tens of millions (at least) of supposedly “religious” Americans continue to hang on his every word. Utterly inexplicable from the outside.

I wouldn't bet on that. It will be very close. Biden is a disaster himself and clearly not well, if he were forced to step down then it is done, the dems have nobody else.

I've heard this a lot. In the States I've come across lots of people (plenty of them educated) who say they couldn't vote for either Trump or Biden (and before that neither for Trump nor Hilary). I really don't understand where this comes from. Only one party is seriously pushing to overthrow the fundamental tenets of the American republic: democracy and separation of powers. Only one party is going nuts with anti-science, post-truth ideas, and demonising various demographics in frighteningly violent terms. And if that's not enough, the Dems are basically centrist on economic policy: taking some timid steps to protect working class people but essentially not diverting from the capitalist American way, while the Republicans want to push towards levels of plutocracy not seen since before FDR. The economy is doing OK when judged against other developed nations and in the context of recovery from the pandemic.

What's the basis of these prevalent ideas of the Democrats being just as extremist as the Republicans, and in the narrative that Biden's presidency is a catastrophe in terms of policy impacts? From where I'm standing, it's purely down to the penetration of absurdly warped propaganda.

On the latter, there's good money to be earned if you're a person of colour willing to be the face of right wing, racist talking points. And I guess there's a small subset of any group of people who like to think "they don't mean me, because I'm special" when they see an oppressor talking about people who look like them.

I am right to understand that while African Americans very overwhelmingly votes Democrat, Republicans have been more successful in targeting support from some of the (diverse) Hispanic communities? I guess some of these people come from pretty conservative cultures, where the machismo, homophobia and even racism (if they tune into the anti-black racism and tune out the anti-Latino racism) might resonate a bit.

If either of those states flipped, there's basically no way the Republicans could win a general election, right? Still seems a long way from happening, despite years of optimistic talk about demographic changes. I guess it doesn't help that the party machine has been in charge of drawing boundaries and administering elections for a long time, so Dems need to win big to take either state.

I can only see 2 scenarios whereby Trumps gets back in again (utterly preposterous as that might seem, given his list of indictments) ...

1) Biden isn't fit to run and drops out, with no obvious & electable alternative ... a distinct possibility, given that anyone can see he isn't fit to be in charge NOW.

2) Given the level of distaste for a Trump/Biden re-run (2 frankly appalling options), a third middle ground candidate with at least half a brain gains enough traction to hoover up a chunk of independent votes ... meaning Trump's loyal, deluded, ignorant base gets him home. Possible, yes?
