Oh, one other specific positive from the match: that Hojlund back-heal. Not just a big lad, eh?

Lovely little flick that was.

The way our seasons going, I'm genuinely going to put big money on a Cameroon-Morocco final
———
No doubt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Absolutely nailed on isn't it?

🙃
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Denmark will probably be invited at the last minute, like how Japan and Qatar get into the Copa America, so we'll be without Højlund as well.

Agreed, it was a game of fine margins that was hard to take the way we lost. Hopefully Martinez’s injury ain’t too bad.

The good thing was that ETH may soon have his best 11 by next week. What I saw were:
1.Antony did way better defensively.
2. With a CF around Rashford can make those killer drives. Now if he can just pass the ball or dink for that matter.
3. This "best team in transition" isn't working when we're the ones losing the ball in our transition. All 3 goals were scored that way.
4. We can keep possession, no problem with that. But when we lose possession, we lose our position too.
5. We had a true CF for once after RvN, it caused a lot of problems for the opposition.
6. Martial and Sancho need to be dropped for good.
7. Long shots, volleys, set pieces are missing.
8. The lads' Mentality needs to improve - they easily give in and give up. Very fragile, Not like in the old days.
9. We miss Fred's harassing. And defensive nous. Casemiro is an upgrade on Fred but he can do only one thing at a time now. His legs are gone

https://twitter.com/beINSPORTS_EN/status/1698400632707703038?s=20 - Andy Gray has it covered here. Richard Keys thinks 1 year is 2 years but, then again, that's perhaps how he ages his wife.

It doesn’t matter of tactics when refs will screw you over deliberately. Its got to the point it seems it is pointless to watch football as it is scripted.

I predicted 3-1 before the game but didn't expect us to get so close to one or perhaps even three points.

The thing is though, Arsenal are far from their best and I'm not convinced they've improved from last season at all. A midfield three of Rice, Ødegaard and Havertz won't work against the better sides but was good enough against us.

Højlund is a positive. He looks a real handful - Gabriel was really struggling with him. Keep him fit and get Ambrabat involved ASAP and the picture may change. It's been a woeful start though. Really, really poor - we couldn't complain if we were on two points.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Gabriel won every duel with Hojlund. He looks a handful in the Andy Carroll mode but too early to name him as the new Haarland like some are doing.

Haven't see anyone on the utd board call him the new Haarland or Haaland for that matter

You must hang around with half-wits if you are hearing a significant number of people saying he's the new Haaland.

Arsenal had a better expected goals than us, so would have been 4 or 5 to them if they had taken their chances.

He could/should have conceded a penalty by "winning" one of them. Højlund was making life difficult for him.

The foul in the box is a freekick anywhere else on the pitch. They just don't give them as pens.

Gabriel didn't look comfortable with him at all. He will rip him a new one at Old Trafford.

If that is your best performance of the season, you have plenty to be worried about. United were awful yesterday and still somehow we made them look better than they are.

All well and good putting 10 men behind the ball against Arsenal but no way are United fans gonna find these performances acceptable against lesser teams
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, we've had a bad start to the season. And are in the midst of a major injury crisis. Most of the first (and second) choice defence out. Of the summer's three outfield signings, one midfielder not registered in time, one midfielder injured, and Hojlund got half an hour (during which the match looked a lot more even in terms of chance creation). None of the United fans are crowing. We know our deficiencies. Half of the forum is on the phone to the Samaritans. My point is merely that in a match that threatened to be very messy, we kept it tight enough that with a little luck going our way it could easily have been one of those games where the side that dictates play loses without it seeming like a travesty, and with players returning from injury and new players getting integrated, we should see further improvement.

Positives:

1. Collective team shape when in both the 'resting' phase and when squeezing up the pitch out of possession.
2. Dalot: I posited before the game that he'd do better against Saka than Shaw usually does and he didn't disappoint. He was our MOTM in my opinion.
3. Hojlund's debut: bullied Gabriel with his strength back to goal, brought our midfield into the attacking third on a couple of occasions, incredible pace and power running the channels and a deft-touch in the build-up to Garnacho's finish. Even if he doesn't hit the goal scoring numbers for us just yet, those attributes improve us significantly in attack
4. It was a competitive match against a team further ahead in their development that on another day we could have won
5. Onana's ball playing across the back

Negatives:

1. Control of possession; it's absolutely criminal how many times we give the ball back to the opposition after regaining possession. There were multiple occasions yesterday (and at Spurs) where we'd give the ball back literally after one pass. Other times it was two or three. I'm genuinely tempted to re-watch the game and go full Hafi-stat by counting up the turnovers and number of passes we string together before giving the ball back again. Casemiro, Bruno, Rashford were the main offenders.
2. Related to the first point to we rarely sustained any attacking pressure or made any chances. Martial's shot & Rashford's follow up were the only pieces of action Ramsdale had to deal with beyond the goal itself.
3. I thought Maguire was actually ok when he came on but the fact we finished the match with him and Evans as our CB pairing is damning. Yes, losing your two starting CB's through injury is a blow to any team, especially when one of your other CB's is already injured, but everyone on this board knew we needed a quality back-up/successor to Varane this summer and we haven't done it, and this is the situation we now find ourselves in.
4. Learning from mistakes; Arsenal overloaded the back post from corners from the very first corner of the game. We concede a 96th minute corner from that exact play, and in an even more glaringly disorganised way than any point in the game. Why is no one spotting that and adjusting to it? The CB's who came onto the pitch have watched it happen again and again from the sideline before coming on.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

When he was signed there was a spate of clickbaity articles written for the general public that went along the lines of 'now United have a big, blonde Scandinavian striker whose name is similar to City's one - will he have the same impact?' Then the body of the article would mention that Hojlund has a lot of potential but is very raw, has only scored a handful of senior goals, and basically he's a long-term project, not a fully armed and operational Death Star. If you've been reading pieces that claimed anything otherwise, then, once again, maybe you need to up the quality of the media you consume.

"If you've been reading pieces that claimed anything otherwise, then, once again, maybe you need to up the quality of the media you consume."

There are two possibilities. One: you're reading articles that actually do claim Hojlund is in the same stratosphere as Haaland, unlike the clickbaity ones I described, in which case you are reading misinformation aimed at idiots. Two: you are reading the headlines of those clickbaity 'Look! Two big Scandinavians with kinda similar names!' articles and walking away with the impression that the media actually is suggesting they might be expected to perform similarly. In which case, you've failed at basic comprehension.

Congrats on the pass-agg use of 'pal' though.
