Divico? Is that the Liverpool board?
Huh? It’s Swiss and been known about for some time
I just got back from France, I was astounded by the quality of wine in supermarkets. Even the €4-€5 bottles were nicer than £7-£10 bottles here.
I do find a large part of drinking wine is the setting and occasion though.

It's probably more VAT and that's 20% in the UK. Add to that, that the sellers add whatever they want onto it, it just becomes expensive to drink anything acceptable.
Having lived in both France and Spain, there are so many wxcellent wines for 5 euros and some stunners when you spend more. You learn a lot when you are in cultures that values good wine and good food.
I’ve worked with distillers in the UK, tax is a small part. Duties are crazy and alcohol produced here sells a lot cheaper abroad.
For a bottle of whiskey that sells for £40, I don’t have the exact figures to hand, but the cost is around £7, distiller makes about £4 profit and similar for the retailer, the rest is taxed.
I usually only buy red wine. Never French. Too much tannin. There are so many superior wines from other countries. French red wine would probably make good paint-stripper though, if the back of my throat after drinking it is anything to go by.

One difference for me is, I only drink red wine from France. I can buy from the growers, go to tastings. Even my supermarket, Monoprix, has invited me this week, plus offers. Generally speaking they get the balance between tannin and fruit just right for my taste.
Rider, in Spain I drink Spanish,

Australia is far worse
You can literally get a 6 pack of coopers for half the price in Australia despite the fact they have to ship it all the way to the US
Taxation and duties are insane, it’s ten quid a pint down there

The difference must lie elsewhere. VAT on wine is 21% in Spain.
Still, I agree with your message in the main. If you spend a fiver on a bottle in a regular high street supermarket in Spain you can pretty much buy with your eyes closed knowing you're going to get a good quality product.
Of course, there's a huge variety of wine regions and grapes, and you need to work out which ones are more to your taste.

Not surprised most French stuff is dreadful with the exception of Chateauneuf Du pap.
Best part about the UK for wine is the huge selection. New world, old world. In Europe it tends to be far more local wines only meaning you miss out on the new world wine which generally appeals to a younger drinker.

Had a man of your intelligence down more as a white lightening and md20/20 connoisseur.
I worked with a bloke in rural Holland who had spent a lot of time in France.
He introduced to me to his 'Boring Saturday Night In' in concept.
A few of bottles of the (almost) cheapest bottles of red, the most pungent/powerful selection of cheeses available, freshly baked bread with local butter.
Absolutely fantastic if you're sat outside with a few mates.
