I've cracked the formula for a win:

Wear my Denis the Menace socks and make eye contact with vidal pre-game.

Job's sorted. UTR. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Vidal might need to drop the shoulder for that to be a sure thing.

It was a tactical comment. Psychology plays a big part in performance and by questioning Bird's positioning I knew we'd see a strong performance.

A late return for me what with motorways inexplicably closed.

I spied Scouse from a distance which is the best way to do it of course.

I thought there were spells of good stuff by us when we tried to play the ball on the floor but also periods where we played uninspiring territory football as in other games. The game passed Bird by quite a bit in the first half but when he did get on the ball we looked a much better team. I don’t think a forward position gets the best from him though.

The second half was certainly the best half of exciting football I’ve seen this season with both teams carrying threat. Blackpool were more patient in their build-up while we tried to play very quickly forward. When it worked we looked very dangerous. I’m still not quite sure what the overall plan for the match is though - still a fair bit of kicking it long towards Collins. He battles manfully but it’s a bit hit and hope. When it’s quick and on the floor it’s so much better.

I thought Fornah was the pick and he has got better with each game. He is starting to look like a real asset and the same can be said for Niambe.

Wins bring confidence and I hope also a bit of belief in their ability to do something with the ball rather than the “safe” option of lumping it down the channels. There were signs of this in the second half but at times we invited them on a bit too much for my liking when we might have taken the sting out of the game with a bit of possession.

A good night though. Goodnight.

Vidal - a good assessment, as might ne expected. Bird was a bit anonymous for large parts of 1st half. Some flashes that came to nowt, but was more involved as time went on. Lack of match fitness I'd say, hence subbed on 70. Position wise, Smith holds the CDM role together and Fornah was stronger than Bird, so if Bird is going to play, he'll have to adapt to the forward role

Yes should have mentioned Smith. His use of the ball isn’t always what we want but last night every part of his game was excellent. When Thompson comes back we will have good competition for the midfield places and should be able to sub players who are starting to tire without weakening the team. Fornah is much better at winning and protecting the ball than it appeared on his debut and he and Smith were a very strong pair last night.

It was after we scored our second.

Don't know if anyone mentioned how we set up last night. Out of possession it was a back five with Wilson right back and Niambe the right of 3 centre backs. As soon as we got the ball though Wilson moved forwards, Niambe across and it became a 4-2-3-1 with Wilson, Bird and NML behind Collins. I think we have seen Warne experimenting a bit with formations - earlier in the season before Rooney got injured we had a back four out of possession with Fozzy getting further forward when we had the ball. It seems that whichever side NML plays, the full back stays at home, with more flexibility on the opposite flank. Interesting.

Are you suggesting there were tactics being employed Vidal?

posted on 4/10/23

To the untrained eye it looked that way, yes. What I find a bit frustrating with Warne is that I think I can see what he is trying to do in some parts of our game but not in others. I think he might be better at coaching teams how to play without the ball than with it. Maybe I'm just too dim to get the full picture. But more positives than negatives yesterday.

No post match review from Chicago which is rare. Hope all is good.

Cheers for that Vidal, I was wondering why it was mentioned elsewhere we were playing a 352 formation, makes sense now.

The without the ball approach seems to be working (just) given we've conceded just twice in the last five matches. The extended highlights does indicate we are still very soft at the back and after going 2-0 up and conceding a sucker punch goal we very easily could have been pegged back to 2-2 had Rhodes header been a touch more fortunate.

The feelings after that would have been very different, but it just goes to show just how incredibly tight each game is in this division if you compare it to the Bolton match.

I touched on it yesterday but just to echo it again, our bench looked really strong last night and if we can avoid injuries and get the injured party fit we certainly do have a game changing bench.

We're NOW starting to see a balance in midfield that to me is a little more reassuring with Smith & Fornah. Missed messages regarding Bird, but the jist I've got is not as effective in the first half, better in the second.

PW needs to ensure he's not going to fit players in the side like Bird & Hourihane together because they're expected to be and focus more on the better balance.

For all of Houriahne's benefits I did wonder how we would look without him in the side, how the midfield balance would come across and have faired okay so far. I'd much rather see Bird and Hourihane alternate in the side with Smith and Fornah allowed to continue their partnership and hopefully flourish.

Thanks Desi and all is well here in spite of covid booster and flu jabs!

I did in fact post a short comment after the game just confirming that picking a MOM from that squad was virtually impossible as they were all so good, including Wilson in spite of his missed sitters; also asking the PW outers and Collo bashers to shut up.

Now that we are approaching the availability of a fully fit squad we are starting to see the benefits of PW, his coaches and recruitment. What great signings Fornah and Nyambe are proving to be and it's no-one's fault that our two loan signings have so far been able to contribute little.

It's great to get Vidal's comments on formations used as these are not too apparent on a computer screen. I now reckon that with this squad (if most stay fit) the team should be capable of adopting and adapting to different formations. Lots of fans have criticised PW for not having a plan B but if Vidal is right then he clearly does. Being able to adapt has the advantage of confusing the oppo and while I personally much prefer four at the back, if the team can adapt and safely use three with wing backs for parts of games then fine.

As I said earlier, it's coming!

PS This was Bird's first real outing for some time so it's not that surprising that it took him a while to get involved.
