----------------------------------------------------------------------
I bet we'd have failed to qualify out of that group too with Southgate. Look at his record against big teams, it's pretty awful.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And we now claiming Uruguay and Costa Rica are big teams?

The "Golden Generation" thing with England is also probably getting overdone. England have a lot of strengths, especially their offensive potential with the likes of Kane, Saka, Bellingham and Foden, but there are serious holes in the squad. Defense isn't great (hence the likes of Maguire still stinking up the team), and they need a little more quality in midfield.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good point.
One of the reasons "golden generation" is a term that is overused is due to media abusing this during the times of Beckham, Owen etc
The current gen are as good as any of their predecessors imo. ABout defense, we will never how good some of our promising young defenders are because Safegate is sticking with the old ones, like Slabhead etc...We need a manager (new) who will play and bring in the talent we have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
hes still got players in def and midfield who play in some of the best defences in the best league in the world... with the best defensive records. not like hes stuck with players from the champs is it. Stones Walker etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stones is like City's 4th choice CB now and nowhere close to a world class defender. Walker is solid enough. Hardly the days when England had Cole, Ferdinand, Campbell, Terry, Neville etc and the likes of Ledley King couldn't even get into the team. Stones wouldn't even be as good as Carragher who was like 6th choice back then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
southgate plays football like its still that era. the games moved on esp in defence and hes been left behind. Klopp revolutionised fullbacks and what can be expected, look how peps defence lines up and operates. what we have with fullbacks moving into mf be it stones zinchenko trent etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
International football isn't nearly as innovative though. Managers keep it simple cos there is no time to work with players.
most southgates players are managed by managers who show the way and use systems and play football southgate can only dream of. His squads stacked af theyre all pretty much playing club level at top clubs under talented managers and apart from Southgates favourites like Pickford Maguire Phillips etc most are extremely successful at club level.
yet the sheit southgate dishes up is almost unwatchable.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the likes of West Ham, Palace, Everton and the likes went for Southgate if they were in a position of replacing their manager when Southgate left England. In fact Palace seems a very likely destination if it was after Euro 24.

Didn't Southgate take your lot to a Euro final and a World Cup semi - better than what the "Golden Generation" did even though they were better than what Southgate has.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The state of the big rivals now compared to then though;
Germany - Worst they've ever been, B tier nation now
Italy - Same as Germany and couldn't even make the WC
Spain - Very young side in transition. A million miles away from that dominant side of of the 2000's.
Belgium - Golden era almost over
Netherlands - Miles off there better sides over the years
The only sides that are as strong now as they were back in England's golden era, are France and Portugal who have phenomenonal squads now.
Mad that when a team or manager people don't like does well the quality of all other teams falls massively 😂
It's true though that the quality of many traditionally strong sides has absolutely plummeted as England's own fortunes rise - biggest drops being Germany and Italy. Other than Portugal, can't think of any of the big sides who are in the midst of a generation that favorably compares to their more successful teams.

Only France have an arguably better team in World Football. England are that close. France can also get it across the line and a manager whose won it all. Sick and tired of watching him downplay another dross performance defending his coma inducing tactics and in ability to acknowledge his hypocritical attitude in squad selection.

And a number of their players like Dembele and Coman never quite developed into what I expected they'd be.

Was not a ‘average’ italian side.
Since 2010 we have had the wurst italian side ever apart from when they all were killed in a plane crash.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the likes of West Ham, Palace, Everton and the likes went for Southgate if they were in a position of replacing their manager when Southgate left England. In fact Palace seems a very likely destination if it was after Euro 24.

Exactly. No big team.

Wouldn't make it at city, Liverpool arsenal but would probably do a job at least as well as conte at Tottenham or eth at man UTD.
He plays it safe because his defense isn't the best. Imo he could manage at least 10 - 12 pl teams.

I don't think one of the big clubs - Spurs, Arsenal, City, United, Liverpool or Chelsea would touch him while they have their big club status. Newcastle probably wouldn't either now since their takeover. He hasn't done enough in his career to be appealing to those clubs.
