It suits us this season. We dont have too many fringe players who we want to give time to in games.

Yes the likes of PEH and Dier etc could all play but they aint the future.

I only see UCL next season as necessary for money, but ultimately would be happy with the Europa which would give us a chance to give some players more time to settle in and stay sharp (at least in the early rounds) and may be play their way into the first XI.

I seem to remember Kane's career began like, this, scored lots of goals in Europa which then forced his way into the PL team.

Once it gets to the business end then hopefully the squad is well settled and we're able to fight on more than 1 front.

To keep a balance of strength and rotation, i think we could line up in a mid week europe game like this:

Vicario
Porro
Romero or VdV
New CB (Dier replacement)
New LB (Davies/Sess/Perisic replacement)

Bentancur/Bissouma/Sarr
New CM (PEH replacement)
New AM

Johnson/Richarlison
New FWD
Deki

Bench options: VdV/Son/Madders/Bissouma/Sarr/Udogie/Phillips/Richy/Emerson/Gil/GLC

5 decent signings and we're a strong setup that should be able to cope with Europe & the PL and be way more injury resistant.

I would love to see us go all out to win the Europa.

But I think that even next season is too soon to be in Europe with the squad we have.

Obviously want us to finish as high as possible but I can’t see more than one quality(🤞🏻) addition in Jan and two or three in the summer. This still leaves us well short of a squad that can fight on two fronts IMO
----------------------------------------------------------------------

To be fair Tarrico, other clubs seem to be able to cope with Europe OK. Have Brighton, Villa or West Ham got a stronger squad than Spurs as it stands. I don`t think so. What makes Spurs squad so weak at the moment is the 9/10 injuries.

But as I said, I am not overly bothered about no European football for a season or two.

Indeed mate.

I feel that 3 decent players, through the spine (CB, AM & FWD) and we have very strong options.

Then just much better cover behind Udogie, Bissouma, Deki and its looking way better.

Not sure what will happen this January, but i am torn between getting in a CB now or waiting for the summer when we will probably be able to afford and attract better quality. Depends on VdVs likely return. If he truly is New Year then perhaps we dont need to panic, if its more like Feb or beyond then we need someone in or risk struggling at the back and being very exposed to more injury crisies.

I'd be relieved too, your weak squad has already been exposed without European football. Imagine embarrassing yourselves in the group stages again.

I think it's sort of a fair comment to be honest. We'd have no chance of achieving Arsenals coveted 'last 16 trophy' this season, so it's better that we're not involved this time.

Sandy mate, I know spurs are in free fall but this is a little extreme.

I’m sure you can manage an 8th place finish and try and do what West Ham did and win the conference

I was happy to miss Euro footie for this season as I felt the club needed a complete reset and I thought Levy would spin last season as a successful one if we’d qualified for any of the 3 competitions.

Can you imagine trying to negotiate a European campaign with our current squad/injury list?

I'd like to be back in it next season providing we have the players/squad to cope otherwise it's a waste of time.

posted on 1/12/23

indeed.

we have undergone a lot of change and there was no certainty that Ange would be a successful, so while we never really want to be out of Europe, we do have a really good chance to reset, build momentum this season and be in a position to add quality depth next, which would be necessary for any European campaign.

Its also useful this season for ANge to be able to truly assess and highlight the inadequacies of the squad, when we only have League and FA Cup. Even with minimal games we are in a position where we are short in the squad, and not only that but some squad members (PEH, Dier, Skipp) are not even used despite us being somewhat desperate.

So its doubly clear that we need more numbers and we need more quality that will suit our style.

No CB and no DM started the game vs Villa, but we had 1 CB and 2 DMs on the bench. If that isn't a message to the decision-makers then i do not know what is!

I dont buy this small squad this, not big enough for 2 fronts that. Apart from our CB area, the squad is fine, just been very unlucky getting all the injuries at once. Lo celso is adequate to back up madders - you are not gonna get a better quality player for back up, ever. CM is stacked pretty much with decent options. Wing is also stacked although quality could be slightly improved, and up front we are light tbf.

Do West Ham, Brighton, Villa have a much bigger depth than us? They’ve all qualified with a game to spare, playing thurs-sun and it hasn’t affected their league form too much. Brighton have actually got loads of injuries, but their academy and coaching is just so good.

All the excuses we’ve given over the years of thurs-sun has been completely disproven this season.

Id much rather win the FA Cup than qualify for Europe this season given the choice !

I would say its not the numbers so much its the quality.

Udogie vs Davies
Bissouma vs PEH
Son vs Richy
VdV vs Dier

I agree on the CM, if Bentancur was ok, but without him its PEH and Skipp behind Biss & Sarr and thats a massive drop off.

As the season progresses it it will effect these teams if they progress.

WHU go to a final and SF but their league form was garbage

If Villa / BHA go far, it will be harder to keep a top 4-6 challenge up plus play in big Euro nights at the business end of the season.

I think that is where we have struggled. Under Poch we did ok in UCL and stayed top 4, but to go far in those comps and maintain league form is tough if the squad isnt built for it with enough depth of quality. Even the likes of United and LFC have struggled in the same way. Jose's Utd gave up on the top 4 chase and focussed on the Europa. They couldnt manage both

Right now the group stages aint as challenging so a degree of rotation is possible.

They’ve won 1 legit Euro comp in their history - the cup winners cup - I’ve always maintained they are the biggest underachievers in European football. All that domestic success yet we have 3 times their Euro trophy haul and have been in as many CL finals as they have.

It made me laugh seeing their score midweek, walloping Lens 6-0, great, but at some point you have to knock out a top team - something they rarely ever do in this comp. They are out as soon as they hit Barca, Real, Bayern, PSG, City - and a few of the others will cause them problems as wel

Pranks, Spurs are not in free fall Four points off the top, with 10 injuries and suspensions. Be back in amongst it when the injuries subside.

No need to worry about Spurs.

As for us, we need more players and Europa level football at least. I don’t like how spaced out the games are for us, it feels like an eternity since that Chelsea game because we’ve only played twice since.

Agree with Tarricco - we need to start trying to win these comps also, although the farmers trophy would feel quite hollow given the absolute poverty of opposition

Good post. But I think European sides are dire this season. Quality all across Europe is poor. Hence much easier for English clubs. The fact West Ham won a so called European trophy last season, shows how poor it is.

Anything less than English clubs winning all three European trophies would be a failure.
