The FA Cup

It would break the trophy "drought" back and give confidence to the team and just as importantly the fans

The cups however can be a lottery and one poor performance or bad luck and it's all over

If Ange goes strong with his team selections in the cup I reckon Spurs have got every chance of winning it this year. I was so impressed with how he approached the Man City game. Take the same approach in the cup and the long wait for a trophy may finally come to an end.

With team selection we will not have too many options anyway in the 3rd round, team will just about pick its self, later rounds hopefully a few more options

It’s all about the luck of draw

Seem to remember 1 year arsenal won it without playing outside of London

Would rather with the FAC this year snd miss out on Euro footy again next season tbh. Break that hoodoo

Winning it would put us in Europe

Our biggest issue with this cup over the last ten years certainly is that we have deprioritised it and essentially rotated ourselves out.

We have a bad habit of drawing a Championship side away and then sticking half a team out only to lose narrowly.

It’s quite simple, since we started qualifying for the CL regularly this competition took a serious back seat and we have seen it as an inconvenience most years. Much to the chagrin of some on here I do blame Levy for that, I believe the way the managers contracts are set up they are heavily incentivised to qualify for the CL over winning a domestic cup which is why we rotate so much in this comp. Last season was a classic - Sheffield United away midweek, we rotate to keep players fit for Wolves away at the weekend and to give us a boost for top 4, only to get knocked out of the cup, lose at Wolves and not qualify for Europe at all - made me sick that game.

The only time I have lost my schitt since that game was when Ange rotated us out of the league cup at Fulham - for me this is the single biggest crime at the club, allowing people from within to weaken our chances of winning domestic silverware.

I want our strongest side against Burnley and if we progress every other tie - we’ve no excuse of a fixture pile up and our injury situation should be much better by the time this rolls around

posted on 5/12/23

As for luck of the draw - of course we need it, but in the last 5 years we’ve been knocked out away at Boro, away at Burnley, away at Sheff U and at home to Norwich - we’ve not drawn Man City or Liverpool - we’ve just not taken the ties seriously and found ourselves caught out on the night.

love Ange but my least favourite thing he's done so far was definitely playing a b team against Fulham. anytime you're playing a premier league side you have to be playing a strong side regardless of the competition. You're also setting those second stringers to fail too, playing them alongside 8 or 9 other players lacking sharpness and overall quality

Portsmouth, Preston, Sheffield United
Morecombe, Brighton, Middlesbrough
Marine, Wycombe, Everton
Middlesbrough, Southampton, Norwich
Tranmere, Crystal Palace.
Wimbledon, Newport, Rochdale, Swansea, Man Utd (semi)

We can hardly moan about luck of the draw when you look at those runs. The only good team we have had was when we got to a semi - but lets not dwell on our semi failures!

My only disappointment with Ange so far has been playing the b team v Fulham in the cup.

I really hope he goes strong with Burnley. Would much rather a trophy than champions league qualification. He's making us into a team who are capable of beating anyone on their day. I really hope he takes the cups seriously

Exactly that - zero benefit to the players that come into that side - whereas put 2-3 in a settled side and they will benefit massively.

Our injury crisis should have abated by the Burnley - give Maddison and VDV a chance to build match sharpness but otherwise go with the strongest side. I suspect Burnley will go weak as they will be looking to stay up. That gives us a chance to start strong, blow them away in the first half and then make subs to give other players some playing time - that’s what we should be doing

So much to do with the draw and timing of injuries and suspensions.
Arsenal or Liverpool won't even get passed the third round.

Exactly - look at that list - we would all be piling on on the Gooners for their lucky draws if they got that lot - only Ancellotti’s Everton away and United in the semi weren’t straight forward draws for us.

in the earlier rounds its a bit easier to go strong as its a weekend fixture without a midweek match.

once the 5th round comes along they are usually mid week games to add to the usual schedule.

While i agree that generally we have rotated the squad in the domestic cups too much, last season we also had UCL , so played FA Cup Weds, PL Sunday and UCL vs Milan Wednesday.

You would expect Spurs to be able to beat Championship opposition with a weakened team, so a few changes would be expected, but I seem to remember Conte making quite a lot of changes in what was then quite a weak squad.

We will need some players back and may be 1 or 2 added to be able to keep going on more than 1 front this season

BTW OP, it is ridiculous that its been so long since we won it or made a final. We have squandered some good chances though, Portsmouth with 'Arry and Chelsea with Poch spring to mind. But the one that annoyed me most was s Man Utd. We had every advantage, form (had beaten them couple weeks earlier), fit squad, at Wembley (our home at the time) and we simply did not turn up in a big game

While priorities and squad depth have contributed, it is also now 'a thing' that we havent won anything for ages and the burden of this seems to be too much at times.

I hope the refreshing change that Ange has brought to the club also continues into the mindset when it comes to these cup games. We seem to have a focus on the way we play, not necessarily the opposition or the occasion which could work well in the bigger games.

Arsenal won the FA Cup last in 2020 and ended 8th in the league.

Where is the history rewriting there?
2020 is recent.
They are both in the title race and in Europe.

So 3 years ago isn’t recently??? Spurs weren’t in a CL final recently??? - i don’t think you can count that as rewriting history.

If you offered me 8th and an FA cup win right now I would snap your hand off and suspect most posters on this site would

Don’t worry about, because I didn’t lick Levy’s feet, Devon will find fault with what I have said - it’s his m.o.

Funny how you'd accept 8th but moan like hell that we dont have a complete squad yet.

Issue with fans like you is that you see this as a transition season when we are building towards something, we have a great start, get done by injuries and susepnsions and you start moaning, as if you suddenly expected us to have kept up a title challenge, and now you say you'd accept 8th.

You are feckin all over the place with your flip flopping expectations. I aint sticking up for Levy, i'm just calling out your BS!

It is disgraceful. It'd be something if we even just made a final. Looking at the list of teams that have reached a final since should make you embarrassed.

There can be no cutting corners when we approach this cup. A tricky tie already against a fellow PL club.

We left ourselves a CB short - that’s been my only criticism other than rotating ourselves out of the cup at Fulham - please point out anything else.

I would be faaacking giddy if we won the FA cup - giddier than you when you open up your present of Daniel Levy Pajamas on Xmas morning.

The problem with fans like you is that you see yourself as a true fan who backs the people in charge regardless and thinks it’s a good thing. When in actual fact your blind devotion to Levy is part of the reason why we don’t compete for trophies, you ask for patience towards a man that’s been here 23 years and get huffy when others point out his failings.

You admittedly don’t flip flop, your Levy devotion is consistent, but it’s also BS and part of the reason we’re not successful

posted on 5/12/23

Levy has ripped the heart and soul out of this club, he doesn't give a flying shiete about winning the FA Cup, it's all about league position and the revenue it brings. If there was £25m prize money available for winning the Cup, Levy would tell his managers to take it seriously.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I havent "backed the people in charge regardless". I have been plenty critical of the ownership and like you said, they are part of the reason why we have not won more. Just because I am not ENIC Out, does not mean I back them unreservedly.

Difference is that i do not see them as the only reason.

It's a disgrace that we havent won anything for ages and a source of great embarrassment but it deserves greater investigation than simply laying everything at the door of the owners.

I don't see myself as a true fan, I just apply some perspective to my expectations. We have no divine right to be challenging or winning anything. In the natural order of things, were probably the top 6th club in the land, both financially and historically. Fans dont like to hear that and we should always be striving to achieve more than that, but its the facts.

Our cup drought, which has effectively lasted since the mid 1980s, is embarrassing but goes way deeper than Mr Levy and precedes ENICs ownership.

Whenever we’ve rotated the team, we’ve lost!

This just proves that our squad, bar one or two, aren’t good enough.

Unless we strengthen the squad player situation, we won’t win anything!
