Sportwashing

It seems to be only a term used for Middle Eastern countries.

What happened with Jon Rahm in Golf is disgusting though and one the reasons FFP is a good thing.

Yes, virtually every country at least tries it.

The difference is one of scale and of the funds being funnelled directly through state entities.

Nevertheless, it's extremely common in other sports, and doesn't necessarily depend on pumping in the funds. Take athletics, for example, where virtually every Western nation extends passports to African athletes to run under their flag.

Why is it disgusting? I’m not that well up on the subject so please correct me if I’m wrong, but man takes passive pay day to do job isn’t disgusting it’s a fact of life.

France and England wouldn’t be the sides they are without this

Guess it could be distinguished by whether you're using the sport purely to boost your (unsavoury) image vs wanting to host a sporting event because you/your population love the sport?

Imagine the reality is almost always both but to what degree would set the bar as to what is and isn't sportswashing.

There's a history of sport being used has a propaganda tool for despot regimes.

The term itself might be more modern, but as a concept it's been around since forever.

In bygone days it was simply labelled propaganda. Think Hitler and the Olympics, for example. Franco and Real Madrid. Ceaucescu and Steaua Bucharest. There are endless examples.

Which England players were born outside of England/don't have some sort of English heritage? Genuine question.

I’m not having a go at Rahm at all.

If a company called me today and said you can do less hours for 10 times the pay I’d say snap their hands off regardless of the company was backed by the Saudi regime.

It’s disgusting that an outside entity can come and throw billions at a sport to try and destroy what is already there.

Didn't PGA make a dealmwoth LIV and that betrayed the ones that stayed with PGA? Why wouldn't he jump ship now if that was the case?

Sportswashing has always seemed like an odd concept to us up in Scotland. There has never really been the need up here. What is normal is to play for 90 minutes and then both teams meet in the pub straight away after the match. It means all players are in the same situation so the smell doesn't really matter. There isn't really a need for sportswashing if no one else does it either.

Looks like Sterling moved to England age 5 with Tomori around the same age, not sure they were given a passport for being great footballers

I know it's happened in other sports and possibly with other nations in football but don't believe it's been the case with the English national team? (Which was what Baz suggested)

The England national team would be pretty crap without immigration, that's fair to say. Which is quite ironic given the views of a lot of England football fans.

He is disgusted that the Saudis are able to do that in sport. Not disgusted at Rahm for accepting

The wrestler, Ric Flair, is a good example of sportswashing.

He was mainly in the news for sexual assault allegations following the airing of the Dark Side Of The Ring documentary.

A few weeks later, he announced his 'last ever match' and suddenly all of the allegations moved from the front page on Google if you searched his name, to the 7th page.

Completely lost all signs of his troubles simply by announcing something new to deflect.

Very similar to Boris Johnson and his busses slight of hand.

Has anyone here ever watched a Liv Golf event or Saudi Football League game?
