Utd in talks to extend Martial’s contract

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that the club are discussing contract extensions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial, Victor Lindelof, and Hannibal Mejbiri.

Wan Bissaka (26), Martial (28), Lindelof (29), and Hannibal (20) have all entered the final year of their contracts, with their deals being set to end in the summer of 2024. The club have an option to extend all four players' contracts by another year.

It’s a clause in the contract that’s set to be activated, we always do this with any player entering the final year of their deal to try and get a fee in case they’re sold.

I'm with you on Martial but why would we want to let AWB and Lindelof's contracts run down? Both have resale value - AWB in particular is at least a £30m asset in today's market.

No one is buying Martial though let’s be fair. This is Woodward like behaviour.

Supposedly Joel Glazer's favourite player so anything is possible.

If we extend his contract only for him to leave in 2025 for free instead then someone needs putting up against a wall and shooting.

He's going to cost another 12-13m in wages if we keep him for another year. Absolutely mental to even think of giving him a new deal.

In honour of his playing style?

Depends on their wages vs their quality.

If their wages don't reflect their quality and it's unlikely the player would take a substantial pay cut to move then extending their contracts is a bad idea.

Obviously if you want to keep them that's different but I highly doubt any of them will be moving to a top club post United which should tell you what you need to know about whether they're worth keeping or not...

Reported wages per week:
Martial £250k
Lindelof £120k
AWB £90k
Hannibal £5k

Hannibal is probably worth extending given age and very low wage, even if just to sell he'd likely find suitors for a modest fee.

The rest aren't getting close to those wages while commanding a decent transfer fee elsewhere, bar maybe if Saudi step in but is that a gamble worth taking?

United should let them leave imo especially is they're not homegrown.

The bigger problem though is who you buy to replace the departing players, the signings under ETH have often been shockingly poor.

We didn’t do it with Magic, Mata, Pogba etc. Why would we do it with one of their worst players in our recent history. No one will pay a fee for him.
And if it’s a clause in the contract, why does it need to be negotiated?

Ffs, even I remember the Mata one and I'm not a United fan.

Regardless of which, even if you hadn't, with some fans it seems it's just a "damned if we do, damned if we don't" situation. They'll moan if the contract gets run down and they'll moan if the automatic extension is triggered in the hope of giving yourselves some kind of leverage in a potential negotiation, which you'd think is clearly what it's about in the above cases.

If the club doesn't act now, all of those players will be free to agree terms with a new club next month. Even though it seems unlikely any of the above players will have their current deals matched, there are clubs who might get close, and even clawing back £20M-30M on Martial -who might find takers for that kind of price- and say £10M-odd on the others is better than nothing.

This is mental?! So the club honestly think a club are going to pay money for Martial? Keeping him on another year will cost us roughly £12m in wages, how much do the club think we’re going to sell him for?

I have no issue extending the other 3 as we could either get a fee worth more than the contract we’ll pay them or they’re still relatively young. But this article was specifically about Martial and extending his contract is idiotic.

There is zero chance any club is buying Martial. He's on 250k per week, no one bar the dumbest Saudi club is paying a fee and matching those sort of wages.

If United extend his contract he either miraculously stops being awful and you don't regret it, or far more likely he wastes another 13m in annual wages and then leaves on a free after further stinking up the place.

Would be crazy to extend.

If true, then good.

There's no reason not to keep him.

Reluctant to keep pointing out the obvious, but if a club need's to move players in and out, then the out direction needs to be prioritised on the basis of relative crapness.

Martial is, for instance, a far superior footballer (as a winger) than rashford, and is no worse as a centre forward.

Martial just shouldn't be used in that latter position. That he has been asked to, so often, has been down to a (long-term) problem of the club's inability, or reluctance, to invest in a proper EPL striker/centre forward.

Upgrade inwards by all means, but when choosing who to let go of, or keep, then relative unsuitability is the prime priority.

Well, who else is going to score against Everton? Can't expect a Garnacho worldie every time.

I get why we are renewing Hannibal, Lindelof & AWB. They are either decent squad players or players that someone would buy for a reasonable price imo.

Martial has been here 10 odd years, hasn’t performed for the majority of that, is paid extortionate wages meaning no one is buying him as well as being injury prone.

Foolish to renew his deal.
