Europa League

Bayern will probably want to get that 5-1 pasting out of their system before the next league game

Before the Bournemouth game I'd have said no. But I don't think we've a hope in hell of making top 4 tbh, so yeah i'd take it. And we might as well go for it if we're in it - 'concentrate on the league' narrative doesn't really wash this year, as I suspect we'll get to March not playing for much.

Other thing to consider is that i believe we need English teams (including us) to rack up coefficient points for that 5th CL place (which is still unlikely to be us but gives us a slight shot I suppose). It's not looking great so far with Newcastle and United heading out of the group stages.

It'll take a minor miracle for us to stay in the CL. Nothing against the Europa at all, but sadly I think I'd rather go out altogether, just to minimise player burnout. At the same time, I think the players will put in even less effort without European football.

F-ck no, you think we have a chance of winning it? We need as much time on the training ground and time between games to recover and get players back from injury.

We saw last season what happened when we had too many games to deal with.

A club like United should and has to be competing in Europe. Even if it's the Ropey. (If its good enough for Liverpool its good enough for United)

I get that but if we get to February and are out of contention in the league and also out of the FA Cup possibly it'd be a pretty dull run in.

It would depend on using the squad though and, you never know, if we do get a clean bill of health in the second half of the season we could get better and have a chance in it.

A draw v Bayern would only get us third if Galatasaray win. Any other result in Denmark and we'd need to win.

Tomorrow should be good though as our games have been quite fun in Europe.

United had no chance of winning the CL either.

If we're lucky, we might get Liverpool in the Europa, meaning we can have two Anfield thrashings this season instead of just the one.

I'm pretty sure they would probably thrash United in the OT leg, too.

Europa League is probably United's best way back into the Champions League.

posted on 11/12/23

Normally I'd want to stay in it. I'm not one that looks down on any competition. Sure there is a priority order, but I'd rather win something than nothing.

That being said, I don't think we're anywhere near good enough to win it at the moment with the teams still in it. I think we'd probably be better off putting all our energy into the league games should we go out of the Champions League this week.

It'll be OK. Liverpool will be going for the title then so will rest their players for the league games.

Oh...

And what exactly are we gaining from being in the CL at the moment? Looking sh-t and getting money that we waste on rubbish players and sttupid wages. This desire to be in the CL has done f-ck all for us for too long.

I know you're incredibly optimistic Diafol but do you honestly think we could win the EL? You said we have a chance at Anfield the other day, I just assume you're off your t!ts all the time.

Much better to be in Europe than nothing.

I'm not a wildly optimistic person really. I'm just not hysterical either. Of course we can win at Anfield. That's not to say we will though. It'd take something we rarely see from the players but the ability, if they play well, is there.

Same goes for the Europa.

I dunno, I think Spurs will benefit massively by not being in Europe this season, as did Arsenal a couple seasons back.

Yes, I want the European, just because I like European games.

I don't think it's hysterical to think we will lose at Anfield or fail to win the EL, I think they're actually very normal views. Nothing wrong with accpeting the standard of your club not being that great, ability wise I'd say our squad is currently pretty poor.

I didn't mean you to be honest but some people do go OTT.

We wouldn't be favourites for the Europa and, if I were a betting man, I wouldn't bet on us winning at Anfield but it's not impossible.

I know we're not great at present but I'm not going to get too upset about it and will always do that football fan thing of thinking there's a chance. Otherwise what's the point?

I'm totally gonna be in the pub on Sunday knowing full well we're gonna get a pasting and get laughed at by my friends and be fine with it.
