I don't see why a woman can't be a good ref.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mrs DC misses nothing at home that's for sure!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
She also misses nothing when she's out with us
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's where the money goes then!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Indeed - doesn't she share it with you?

It's about time. My choice was trained dogs or monkeys to replace male refs but this could work too.

it's a nonsense
there will be 1000s of male refs up & down the country better than this girl

only getting the job because she's female

Barton is right btw with his views on women in football

Isn't it telling that no ex players ever become refs though

For the top players, they couldn't probably hack it, and the money relatively speaking would be rubbish.

I think they would realise the amount of shiite they need to put up with so why bother

Sian Massey was one of the better linespeople so yeah, why can't this female ref be one of the best?

She was very good, what happened to her

Well she certainly is brave I'll give her that. I hope she's had coaching on social media abuse for the inevitable sexism she's going to receive there.

And when she inevitably makes a mistake or a series of mistakes it's gonna be utter pandemonium.

some of the reffing in the women's game is awful.

Fair play to her if she is there on merit, it may actually see a bit more sportsman like behaviour from players, but if this is a positive discrimination thing and she is not ready or the promotion merited, then it will only damage her career and that other of prospective female refs.

No issue what so ever with a female ref coming in. There's zero reason for me to believe they can't keep up with the pace or that they can't understand the rules. Someone like Laura Woods is infinitely better at presenting than many male counterparts.

The only slight concern is that this ultimately leads to a dramatic change in the game as a whole. Whether that's good or bad, only time will tell I suppose.

I called months ago that if they wanted to kill the issue with refs dead in the water, just chuck female refs in. First male player who is pictured getting in her face and screaming will be hung in the court of public opinion and probably sold abroad. The problem will take care of itself soon enough. If that Haaland picture was with a female ref instead of a male then there'd be legit lobbies to have him sacked.

And like the two 17 year olds who were arrested for misogynistic chanting at an official, it will cause other people will start to curb their behaviour. As punishments ramp up, people will simply have to quieten down.

There will be positives to this but there's also the chance that it starts to water down and dilute part of what makes English football so appealing. Yes the players are important but the root cause includes things like the atmosphere and general football culture, it's a part of the product. Take that away and maybe the English game starts to lose part of what makes it unique.

Time will tell. I don't see a practical problem with it but as much as people like to say men and women are equal (and in a human rights sense that is completely true), in a practical sense we simply aren't and men will never, ever be able to interact with women in the way they would typically interact with each other. Being arrested for misogynistic chanting is a bit of a worry. Particularly when that really isn't anything compared to what is simply accepted in terms of chants at officials and seem up and down the country every weekend.

But obviously women need to be treated differently, it's just what impact that starts to have. Players no longer crowding the ref will more than likely be a good thing but will be interested to see what the overall game is like in 10 years compared to now. I suppose the game just changes with times and it's not dissimilar to bemoaning the fact that you can't tackle how you once could etc. Maybe removing a lot of the typical 'laddish' behaviour at football grounds will ultimately result in a net positive.

What they will be forced to do though is then take action when it's male ref's as well. If you get arrested for chanting that someone should get their bazingas out for the lads then the same will have to be done for other chants at male officials. Then it'll have to be chants aimed at players and that's when I worry you could see a swing in atmosphere and stadium experience that takes a chunk of what makes football the experience it is away.

Good post Fox. About 50 years ago I went to watch a game in Paris. After a goal the remained seated and applauded. I don't want that here.
It's the last bastion of laddish behavior.

The most ridiculous & redundant statement on here given the current level of the English men's refereeing I'd have said

Oh and a black referee joining as well.

What were the odds, two refs coming in and both minorities in the game, amazing odds. Nothing to do with box ticking either. Amazing.

What do you mean by box ticking?

There's so many black players in the game but no black person at the top level of officiating? You mean that box?

I see some usual suspects getting in the excuses early for their soon incoming repugnance. This country wouldn't stoop to labeling meritorious appointments as box ticking or positive discrimination.

You can't appoint a woman or minority to any role in this country without having accusations thrown at you. They'll find something to cry about for sure, when really their problem is the gender and race of the official.

Racism and sexism are mostly dead. This attitude and ideology is what has taken it's place and we need a name for it as it doesn't really fit the text book definition of racism per se, but it's still just as despicable. Something like "Gammon Cognitive Complexity" would be apt.

We're back to brexit again...many brexit voters wanted non-white and foreigners out of the country and the doors locked... A large proportion of 51% got their wish.... Now we don't have enough fruit pickers or casual labour from European countries that we desperately need, and people are arriving illegally literally by the boatload.

The utter disgust having black referees and female referees has just sent them over the edge
