Mainoo & the midfield

He’s looking very promising so far, I just hope the club do what’s best for his development and not overplay him and ruin his chances of developing fully.

I think he could compliment Casemiro well allowing Casemiro to push forward where he’s been very useful for us. Might be too soon to try 2 more offensive CMs ahead (Bruno and Mount) but if we can get Martinez back and playing to his level last season we could see a far stronger spine.

He’s a talent but he needs to be managed correctly. Last thing we need is to pile a load of pressure on a young lad to be the answer to our woes and break him.

Agreed although he seems to be handling the pressure just fine so.

As a neutral, Mainoo certainly looks a talent, from the little I've seen of him lately. Of course, he's bound to look a bit like Zidane playing alongside Amrabat and McT. Amrabat adds a bit of dig in midfield, but feck me he's a slow, limited footballer .. based on yesterday anyway.

You could argue though that he's under less pressure now as expectation is quite low! All he needs to do is be a competent and average PL midfielder to be an upgrade on most of our options.

It’s three games, though. We’ve been here before with youngsters. Maybe he’ll continue as he has done, in which case, it’s less of an issue. But I don’t think we need to be calling for him to start for the rest of the season now.

We just need to get everyone fit (yes, I know!) and not play two No8s high up the field for now IMO. If everyone is fit then Mainoo will hopefully get rotated sensibly.

We are pretty much down to 1 game a week after Christmas, so we can't have any excuses about being tired, not prepared enough etc.

The fact in 3 games that Mainoo has showed more than the rest of our midfield says it all really. If he's good enough and showing it, we can play him without burning him out. Of course we need to rotate to get players back up to fitness, but if at the end of it, Mainoo turns out to be a first choice option, let's have the balls to go with him.

First time Ive seen Amrabat play for United, in a proper PL game and he looked like another CM that doesnt have the pace and mobility to suit this league. You can add him to Eriksen & Casemiro.

You guys need to embrace the youthful energy of the likes of Mainoo. He'll probably be a bit up and down but he just looks so much better than all your other CM options.

Eriksen doesn’t suit the PL? He was great for Spurs. Casemiro was one of the best midfielders in the league last season.

Mainoo looks quality, seems calm and mature for his age. I hope United doesn't ruin him

If Manchester United start to 'depend' on Mainoo after just 4 senior PL games then he probably wont be at the club in 3 years time or so. If Casimero Erikson McT Amrabat and Co arent deemed good enough thenTen Hag seriously needs to get rid of them all and get some DMFs at the peak of their careers in pronto that can carry and mentor Mainoo along with them. He's one for the long term future IF managed properly.

The same goes for Hojland. Its a joke that ETH is asking him to lead the Man U attacking line, on his own, without another experiened real deal CF at the club to teach him and rotate with him. And Martial is NOT that player.

What a club we have become.

I'm more invested in us nurturing Mainoo correctly right now than in what Mainoo can give the team this season. Like others, wary of overplaying him or putting too much pressure on him so early. I get the impression that ETH, whatever else we think of him, is good at getting that balance right, judging by his handling of Garnacho.

Ive said it before that it seems like the ETH experience is turning out the same as the Ole experience, in that in season 1 it was quite defensive, more counter attacked based and this was successful. Next season its tried to progress to a more controlling and pressing game and has not quite worked. While i think that Casemiro works well in the former, he is not so well suited to the latter and this season has may be shown that a bit (albeit that he started the season unfit and that may have contributed to his showings, which made him look a bit slow & immobile and needing another strong CM alongside him to avoid being exposed).

Tbf to Casemiro he’s notoriously always started seasons poorly and on top of that has been injured. Hard to judge him this season but last season he was great. Not sure EtH wants us to be that controlling, he’s stated he wants us to be the best team on the planet at transitioning.

With us only having one league game in January I hope that by February we'll have most of our players back and available for selection. It'd be great if we could somehow get three wins before the year is out.

No idea what he is on about.

Eriksen isn’t good enough now but he certainly was under Poch.

And as you say, last season Casemiro was one of the best in the league.

Is Onana still going to the ACoN? Last I heard he was thinking about not going because he felt he hadn't done enough for United?

I'm assuming Amrabat and Hannibal will be.

posted on 18/12/23

Amrabat should start every game until he gets that red card and gets a rest. He is almost irreplaceable at this point. That grit is simply offered by no one and hes one of the calmer ones in possession (compare to Mctominay, Bruno?). How we can see Casemiros lack of pace and Eriksen's general unplayable performance and want him is simply shocking to me. The do called advantages in skill is overwhelmed by their lack of any bite or intensity. They would have been demolished today. Does it even bother you guys?

The problem Mainoo starting, as I think he will get game time and for a young lad if it is structured then all good.

The issue is he has to play with Amrabat or Casa and never with McT and Bruno.

I think a Bruno, Erikson, mount even would have helped us yesterday with Amrabat and Mainoo behind one of them. McT shows heart but is pretty pointless in the position he played in yesterday.

….

Eriksen isn’t good enough to start any more. No idea why anyone thinks Mount would have been an asset. There has been no evidence of this yet.

We could have lost the game by quite a few with Bruno or it could have gone the other way. Evidence of recent times points to us losing.
