He was always gonna have a spike in popularity closer to election and some of the Republican support which had been spread over many candidates coalesces behind him.
Obviously Republicans will try to make out that he is benefiting from this, they're the kings of spin, but you can rest assured that this is hurting him badly and his already slim chances for 2024.

We know. The West is doomed, Armageddon is coming unless we kick out everyone who isn't white and vote for Trump. We heard you the first one hundred kabillion eighty times.
Having the right to vote is very much equated with democracy. But until we get past the 'first past the post system', then 'UK democracy' will always be decided for by a few million who happen to live in the right part of the country and decide if we go one way or the other.
Those who advocate first past the post are just those who basically want power, and will come up with all manner of reasons / excuses to keep it.
It's not a 'sexy subject', but then politics rarely is, and it's why we always see these OTT headlines about things that are at the extreme (it's almost like idle football transfer rumours that never happen)
I say this as someone who has voted for all various parties over the years, but the system really needs to change and move with the times.
