Ridiculous timing for European leagues, where nearly all the players ply their trade, but it is what it is.

Interesting point made the other day that by having these comps at this time of year, especially AFCON, it is a disincentive for African players to be bought by the bigger teams in the bigger leagues, who will be relying on them without missing them for up to 6 weeks mid season every 2 years.

Surely it is not good for the development of the game in these countries/continents.

Yeah, both were originally scheduled for June/July 2023 but were changed due to hosts.
I think with the European winter breaks the impact is lessened, but obviously still not ideal.

I’ll be watching AFCON with interest. Up the Super Eagles! On paper I think it’ll be one of the highest quality tournaments for a few years, with Senegal, Ghana, Morroco, Nigeria and Egypt all having pretty strong sides.

I believe they keep trying to move the tournament to a summer one but keep pushing it back, perhaps it is maybe the next one that will be planned to be the start of summer AFCONs
