What about Manchester City?

A knee-jerk response from those assessing profit and sustainability charges tends to be 'what about Manchester City?'.

City were charged in February 2023 with over 100 offences relating to their spending, which date back to 2009 and include allegations of hidden payments and non-co-operation. It is thought unlikely there will be a resolution until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Because these are historic charges, over multiple years, all of which are contested, the case is fundamentally different to the recently announced ones which are regarded as more straightforward, with the arguments over breaches likely to centre around differences of opinion over actual spending or the amounts that can be claimed back.

How come the PL are so quick to fine these clubs but keep dragging their feet with City? Either City is not guilty, or there is something else going on?

Because City have committed that many offences that it's taking ages to work out how severe the punishment needs to be.

They've probably just realised that half of the charges against were for 'crimes committed' before FFP even existed.

If United have broken the rules then they must also take their medicine.

I'm pretty sure they have to see the evidence first but unlike you, I'm not a qualified barrister.

We hand over brown paper bags full of cash, our owners own the UK government, we have so much money we can do what the feck we like or go with the obvious and rational comment from a Boris above.

The principle is the same. Over spending beyond allowed levels.

Why would City hide the costs they are accused of hiding? Because it affects the bottom line and the ability to comply with UEFA and/or PL PPF.

But the details are different as there is a major difference between spending too much and being caught, and spending too much, hiding it through undisclosed payments to avoid being caught. One is cheating, the other is cheating twice over.

What were the FFP rules in 2009?

Fack the Premier League

Meanwhile City continue unpunished

That's a bit rich considering Arsenal bribed their way into the top flight originally.

That was Legit

From what I’ve read only two or three of the City charges are likely to stick, but if they do, it’ll be fun on here mainly because of Boris.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

"They also allegedly broke rules “requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager” related to seasons 2009-10 to 2012-13 inclusive".

So pay Mancini a bit on the side is in breach of the requirement to provide full details of payments AND as part of his time at City was under FFP, would also be a breach of FFP if you have not provided accurate accounts, which in turn may also lead to a failure comply with losses made under FFP.

Yes. That's what I asked. Even said you could be not guilty. But you just wanted to be faux rage offended.

Because Everton and Forest broke PSR rules as per their own submissions.

The charges against City are completely different and a lot more complex.

I hope we have broken the rules and the Glazers are banned from being football operators in England. A fitting punishment I say.

Well about a third of the charges relate to failing to comply with investigations rather than the actual act of cooking the book don't they so that statement above can't be true. It's blatantly obvious City don't comply with any investigation thrown their way. They have lots of things to hide as we found out with the UEFA one.

And we still win the odd trophy with them. You lot would be in the 7th tier under the Glazers. 😂

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The sensational allegations against City were made at a time when government sentiment was firmly in favour of imposing an independent regulator on the league. Which would have been an absolute nightmare for a private member's club such as the EPL.

The public accusations by the league against City were nothing more than a theatrical display of "self policing" as recommended by the Tracey Crouch Report.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the axe to fall any time soon.

They keep running away that's why.

They haven't done anything wrong but they are worried about who is leading the investigation. Yeah that makes sense. If you'd done nothing wrong at all you'd not care if it was Fergie running the investigation would you?

City are as guilty as sin. Those leaked emails are the smoking gun they can't explain. Amateur internet security will be their undoing.
