True Detective Season 4

It started well but last night was a classic filler episode, which is a worry.

My biggest concern is that at the moment it seems so obvious that the mining is poisoning the towns water supply and that caused the scientists to freak out

Massive filler. And only three episodes left.

The mining is causing hallucinations for sure, hence the vision Navarro got. Something is going on with Annie K but I don’t know if they have enough time to resolve it. I’ll watch next week and then may give up.

Gonna stick with it now I’m half way through, but last night was shiete and they need to pick the pace up again

The latest is pap...it's been deleted

I’ve enjoyed it so far. I think people are trying to compare it to season 1 which it’s never going to be as good as, just enjoy it for what it is. Not much else on at the moment, the latest Fargo was ok and so was The Curse. Last season of Curb starts on Sunday which should be good.

I like it but I think the show in general suffers from constantly being compared to season 1, when the magic of season 1 is unlikely to ever be recaptured.

Don't think it's as good season 3 at the mo though.

So far better than season 2. I think the contaminated water story is too obvious, I have a hunch the bearded guy who the cop is boning has some connection to it all.

I gave up on the latest Fargo after three episodes. Way too similar to season one without being remotely as good.
I’m going to start High Town soon and I’ve just started The Bear. Also thinking of Justified City Primeval.

I guarantee the contaminated water is definitely going to be a big part if not all of it - otherwise they are going to have to go down the supernatural route.

I am looking forward to the tongue explanation though

filler in a 6 episode show?

The scientists were studying ice cores, so I reckon they accidentally released a dormant bacteria of some kind.

Would maybe explain why they mentioned the woman's tongue had strange DNA on it.

But isn’t the supernatural element the whole point of True Detective? I’m sure the contaminated water has effected stuff but there will be bigger reasons and plots to come.

Welsh

Probably, I’m sure The Thing is a big influence on this series and that was about scientists uncovering an alien in the depths of the ice. Probably not an alien in this but some other weird thing. There’s also been a ton of Polar Bear references so far, I’m sure that’ll come up again.

It's a bit like that Sky series Fortitude. In fact more than a bit. I've found it so far utterly boring and confusing. Dunno if I can be bothered with watching the rest of it. The best tv I'm watching at the moment is Criminal Record on Apple. Brothers Sun on Netflix is good too - funny, tons of Kung Fu, and Michelle Yeoh - what's not to like.

Never actually watched this after S1, worth it?

Season 3 is definitely worth watching. Each season is loosely linked but they’re also stand alones so you don’t have to worry about missing seasons.

I thought Fargo season 5 wasn't perfect (as seasons 1 and 2 pretty much were) but it was still compelling, thought provoking TV. Juno Temple, Jon Hamm and the whole cast were incredible, for me it had the perfect Coen-esque blend of serious darkness, the uncanny, and absurdity. The exploration of different conceptions of debt was interesting, and ultimately quite profound.

Agreed, same with True Detective. When a series starts with such a strong first season a lot of people wrongly try to compare subsequent seasons when they don’t need to. Series like Fargo and True Detective take big risks by making stand alone seasons withloose running themes but personally I think they’re great TV.

Random recommendation: I stumbled by chance on a Chinese drama (available on Prime) called 'The Long Season'. It follows characters in two timelines, about 20 years apart, with a murder plot in the past and what seems to be a petty crime issue in the present. It's understated and sometimes very funny, but there's clearly some tragedy it's building up to revealing, which will come as a gut punch. I'm really impressed with the actors and the ways the acting and cinematography depict the shifts in material and personal circumstances over time. And I'm surprised that you're allowed to make this kind of prestige TV - quite an unvarnished and ironic depiction of society, including interactions with the state - in such a tightly controlled society as the People's Republic of China.

I’ve heard of that, I’ll give it a go one day. Not necessarily TV but in film China have made a ton of incredible cinema over the years that you wouldn’t expect from them.

Haven't seen anything since season 2 but it looks like they've gone incredibly woke with it which is always a turn off.

Shame because season 1 was incredible.

posted on 30/1/24

What about it is woke, that it has female leads? I guess if only Foster had any history of playing a cop in anything good before.

Well, it's true that I can't imagine a show like the one I've described being allowed to be made in Putin's Russia these days. Domestic TV production is pretty tightly controlled and drama suffers artistically as a result.
